So since Brian is being the average Dartmouth grad and staying in Hanover, I started place-hunting for Sept.
I just visited the Asian guy in a band and girl interior design student(Francis and Marilyn), and I think that place is off the list. It was alright, but nothing special. The upsides to it are that it's got two bathrooms, so I'd only be sharing one with one person, not two, and that Marilyn is an interior design student, so it might turn out awesome (but then, it might also turn out horrifyingly weird, and anyway her semi-unpacked room was nothing to shake a stick at).
The other potentials are the hippy commune which might be awesome or it might be terrifying. I talked to Harrison from that place on the phone, and he's trying to essentially organize seven people to take this gigantic house. It'd only be $468 a month which is incredibly cheap (Just think of how much I'd be saving!), they're a bunch of vegetarians, there's a dog (which is good if it doesn't shed but bad if it does). They all went to see the place tonight, but I couldn't get out of work in time, so I have no idea what it's like and who they are except that they're all hippies (I like hippies, but some get a little grueling sometimes).
Then there's the guy with a cat. I e-mailed him the other day, and we decided we should wait until I knew what was happening 'cause he NEEDED a year commitment. I discovered that I would be able to commit today, so e-mailed him back, but haven't heard anything. That place is right on mass ave and he has a lot of books and likes indie movies and has a cat, which is cool. Again, I'm only sharing the place with one person, so that's great. But I hope he gets back to me!
There's also another bunch I e-mailed in a convenient locale, but haven't heard anything back from them.
Then there are the nerds. I went over and was initially unimpressed with the quality of the place, except that I noted the Risk board, and then saw the porch which was fucking awesome, then we walked into the living room and what should be on the TV but FINAL FANTASY TACTICS??? That's pretty fucking cool. Plus, he's getting a kitten!!! How cool is that?? And since it's a year lease, I'll never have to see it get old--it stays a kitten forever, for all intents and purposes. That rules.
But he's definitely a nerd, and that's okay in some ways, and not okay in others. I don't know that he's going to be much of a conversationalist, and that he's not going to have those obnoxious nerd idiosyncrasies. It could be great, or it might not. And since the place itself was underwhelming, I'm not quite sure. It's him and a girl I didn't meet who's a harvard law student, but I guess also somewhat nerdy (though not a gamer, he pointed out).
So! This is my call for advice! Any is welcome. Right now I'm leaning towards saying "screw it" to the two places I visited and continuing to look, since nothing hit me as "the place." But I might be missing a great opportunity with the nerd; it could be the summer of Sam all over again, for an entire year this time!
Let me know what you think.
