Quake III Arena, in my opinion the ultimate deathmatch game ever made (yes, even more so than Quake II - but that's another story), will be opened up and its source code released for free this week, so sayeth id's John Carmack. What this means is that other developers can use the Quake III engine to develop their other game, hopefully taking the already great system and creating something new and refreshing.
After the disappointing performance of Doom 3, and my dislike of Unreal Tournament's offering, here's to hoping that the next great deathmatch game will be all about speed, balance, and skill, rather than just pretty graphics.
