Can we please be DONE with the bigotry?

Feb 29, 2012 12:36

This morning has been an emotional roller coaster. The trigger was something so incredibly trivial, but the response I've seen online has me alternating between white hot anger and unutterable sadness.

What you said - in neon blinking lights!

I swear if I hear or read another 'I don't want to see them kissing in public.... Oh and it's NOT because they're gay, but I don't want to see ANY couple kissing in public - gay or heterosexual.' rrrrrriiiighhhhhht! IF that marine and his boyfriend had been a het couple and a pic of them kissing had gone viral no one would've been objecting.... much less the ones trying to say they're not prejudiced!

grrrrrrr

GAH! Tell me about. I want to see that picture right alongside the iconic one of the WWII sailor kissing his girlfriend/wife/total stranger.

Enough with the bigotry.

I've seen the two pictures together like that.... but I can't remember where. AfterElton? Tumblr? Google+? Too many places to dig through, but I know it exists.

The video interview here has the two pics side by side.

I'm a United Methodist, and supportive of the UMC's recent "Open Hearts, Open Minds" policy.

More non-fundamentalist & non-conservative Christians must stand up to endorse inclusivity & acceptance (not merely tolerance) of LGBT congregants. Because nowhere in Christian scripture can anyone find a quote of Jesus condemning non-heterosexuality. Jesus sat to lunch with prostitutes, tax collectors, Pharisees & "sinners" of all stripes. For Christ's sake, faith is not about making everyone a religious robot; it's about loving one another & helping them in time of need.

PS: Claudia Black still hasn't accepted my marriage proposal. :(

Thank you! The faux-Christians tend to be on my radar because there's one very closely related to me, so it's something that's in my face and has been for decades.

No, we don't talk much any more. LOL

But there are so MANY Christians in the world whom I respect, even if I disagree with the religion they practice or even just follow (possibly a difference as makes no difference). Where I start to lose respect is when they, too, give the bigots a pass.

So sorry she hasn't accepted. I tried proposing to Jack and Daniel (they're a mated pair, after all, wouldn't consider breaking them up, after all), but they're, y'know, fictional. LOL!

Religion is a construct divorced from morality.

Morality is & should remain a secular but universal concept determined by how it eradicates preventable suffering.

Faith is the personal journey to seek Truth. (But I'm in a tiny minority on those beliefs. I am the captain of my own Christianity.)

I would SO marry SG-1, Classic AND New Teams, in a heartbeat. In fact, I probably already have. ;D

LOL! Someone left kudos on a bunch of my shorter SG1 fic this morning. I'm destressing some by rereading a few of my own old favorites. I love that "Oh, wow! Did *I* write that? COOL!" feeling. LOL!

Good for your parents. I told my daughter something along those lines when she was younger (18 now). She just rolled her eyes and sighed. It's a none issue in her social circle and in her school. The other day at lunch, they were all sitting around figuring the percentage of g/b/l/t/p (one of her classmates identifies as pansexual) to straight in the school. This is what happens when you have a whole school of smart kids and a stats class. LOL

I don't *care* what gender or color or whatever the person she falls in love with is. I just want that person to treat her right and for her to be happy.

I'm glad you live in a place where it's not a big issue. For all that Houston's a pretty laid back, accepting place, there are enough assholes who want to climb their way to heaven on the backs of people like you and me to make life occasionally difficult (and yes, I've heard some refer to it like that).

Facebook is full of some of the ugliest Christians God put on this earth.

And they all want everyone to regularly mention Jesus in your status or you're not a true believer. I offended one once when I commented that I hoped Jesus had better things to do than fuck around on Facebook.

Anyway, great post.
