Title: An Apathy that is Criminal
Rating: G
Fandom: SPN
Prompt: Unwanted information comes through a surprising channel
Summary: Uriel only cares about one thing these days, but it's enough to change the game. (Slight AU.)

You have become a creature incapable of love. (You loathe humans. You hate that their filth and violence holds the highest favor in the eyes of God. You resent your time on Earth in the name of holy orders, dirtying your vessel’s feet in travel, roughening the skin of your hands for the sake of the Host.)

But this is not true, because you love Castiel: there is no part of the universe you have not seen together, no mission you haven’t jointly accomplished. (He is the one who tirelessly retrieves you during the First War, when you fall into the Pit-he comes when the others feel the loss of one angel is requisite. You are the one who defends him against Counsels who question his rare acts of mercy during battle.)

You have spent millennia together. You know what the other is thinking without the use of Grace. You are both grim and literal, incapable of bearing bureaucracy if a path of action is available. Your cognizance of one another is borne from being inseparable. (This is how you know he is in love with Dean Winchester: the way his eyes linger, the way his voice holds traces of apology. This is how he knows you don’t approve.)

But when Zachariah claims you must kill Castiel-because he covets and loves and doubts-it is a jolt: it is true that Zachariah is your brother, but Castiel is your brother-in-arms, and there is a weighty difference. Zachariah assumes the task will be easy, because all angels know you are a creature incapable of love.

But this is not true. The truth is: you are incapable of loving all except Castiel.

(You are there at the prophet’s house. Castiel tells the Righteous Man I will hold them off. I will hold them all off, but he retrieved you from the Pit, he walked with you to the gates of Jerusalem: you will not leave him now, when Castiel-the one thing you love-is prepared to throw himself to the wolves.

He sends Dean away.

You stand by Castiel’s side and face the brightening window.)

FIN.
