I've moved to a small but serviceable apartment in Albany, NY. I will be starting a rotation at a laboratory at the Albany Medical College on Monday, as part of a Ph.D. program in the Center for Immunology and Microbial Disease. Topic of research will be NLRs, a type of receptor found in the cytoplasm of cells. These receptors are activated by the presence of DNA in the cytoplasm (which normally only happens during cell injury or infection) and they cause inflammation. The lab is interested in the role these receptors play in tularensis infection.
Francisella tularensis is a Class A agent which has been investigated and/or developed by several countries for use as a biological warfare agent. It is easily aerosolized, which means it can be dispersed on a battlefield or in a populated center to infect a large number of people. Infection in the lungs is pretty hard to treat and often fatal.
This has me giddy.
