Rain rain~~

Feb 26, 2006 17:53

It has been 3 days of raining here… they say it’ll rain for one week and then there will be a change of weather. It will just get warmer from now. Damn! Just as I’m starting to enjoy the cool weather here. Ah well anyway I hate the temperature in my office, so damn cold like a freezer.

It’s crazy that the 3 days of raining cause so much troubles in Dubai as the drainage system here are not good enough to handle so much rain. But even though it hardly rains in Dubai (90% sunshine) I think you still need to build more drains to handle that few days of rain wot! Duh! See newspaper article and the havoc caused:

14mm ...How a Tiny Bit Of Rain Caused Havac In Dubai
Friday, 24 February 2006

Parts of Dubai were left in chaos yesterday - after just 14.6 millimetres of rain. Roads and villas were flooded and without power, motorists were left stranded and hundreds of accidents were reported as thunderstorms lashed the city.

And forecasters warned of more bad weather to come today and tomorrow. Scores of villas in luxury developments such as Emirates Hills and Arabian Ranches were flooded - some under several inches of water.

Several were left without power. Roads across the city were flooded as drains failed to cope with the water. Police said they had dealt with 513 accidents, mostly on Emirates Road as drivers failed to slow down.

Seven cars rolled over, police said, though there were no reports of serious injuries. According to the Dubai Met office just 14.6 millimetres of rain fell on the city from 6.00pm on Wednesday to 6.00pm yesterday.

That’s less than half the record for a day in February - 35.7mm in 1999. Developments were left furious yesterday as water poured in through windows, doors and, in some cases, ceilings and A/C ducts.

Houses in Emirates Hills and Arabian Ranches were hit particularly badly, with dozens of residents contacting 7DAYS to voice their frustration. Several were left without power after water got into the fuse box.

Developer Emaar said in a statement its “staff have been on site in its communities assisting customers following the unusually inclement weather which has revealed some leakages and, in isolated cases, some minor flooding due to drain blockages.”

Some shops in Ibn Battuta were forced to close after water poured in. At least one shop’s false ceiling collapsed.

Lucky thing we stayed on the 4th floor so we're not inconvenienced by the flood. And lucky thing we drive a big car so the water doesn't seep in. Somehow this gloomy weather reminds me of Spore weather and I'm plagued by a sense of home-sickness for a while.
