bit of earth

I'm so happy right now. I just went outside, put fertilizer on the rosebushes, cleaned the leaves and dead plants out of five small garden beds, weeded, and turned the earth with a trowel. And then I planted. As with most big endeavors, most of the work is in the preparation. I love getting my hands in the dirt when it's in aid of something I enjoy.

Let the record show that this was the day I planted Swiss chard, lettuce, and spinach seeds, and also planted three rosemary sprigs and a lavender plant that struggled and fainted but made it through the winter indoors in a pot. It's such a hero. I'll probably do a photo post later--hopefully I can take a series of photos documenting growth during the next few weeks. It's finally warm enough outside to garden. It's as if the Earth decided that she likes us.

Does anyone have ideas for my lemon trees? I need to give a few away. Currently, I have six young lemon trees in pots, saplings ranging from six inches to two feet high, and I'd love to give a couple of them to good homes. I'm running out of room under the plant lights, and I will want to start some new indoor plants at the end of this year. Basically I need the space, and yet I'm reluctant to just take it to Craigslist, because I'd like some assurance that I'm not just giving them out to jerks who will plant them in the yard and let them die. This may sound silly, but I'd like at least some hope they're going to be of use to people who will appreciate them.
