nd now we go back to our regular lightweight blogging. All this saga writing has been taking it out of me. I felt like I was writing a novella. I can promise you that all posts for the next month will be under 1000 words!

So my friends, today AdoringHusband and I drove Zara to Manhattan for a photo shoot. Last week, I scoped out on AntiRacist Parent that Best Life Magazine was looking for biracial children between the ages of 6 months and 8 years old to be photographed to accompany one of its articles for the March issue. I thought, what the hell, my daughter is beautiful. I think she’ll be perfect.

I sent the contact person a link to Zara’s pictures on Flickr and next thing I knew, we had an appointment for 2:15 PM today in the Village. Initially she was a little overwhelmed in front of the lights and cameras, but gradually she moved a little farther away from Daddy’s knee and sat and stood on the proffered box for her close up. There was also an amazing child fluffer who had her laughing and squealing with delight in no time.

Our payment for this participation was a print from the session. Though I was hoping for one of the ones of her smiling (I didn’t really get to see the pictures on the computer as they were taken), the one I was given was the 8×11 photo you see here. It’s an evocative picture of her and RaeRae, her bunny.

After publication, the photographer (a father from ARP) said that he would send me some more of the pictures from the shoot. I can’t wait to see the rest. But this one is going right up in the Zara photo gallery that is my office wall.

I’m amazed at how much her expression of innocence and vulnerability in this photo makes me just want to put my arms around her and protect her from any and all harm. I went in expecting a portrait and I came out with art.

In other important news (though this is truly a pathetic attempt at a transition between the two stories), Zara made poopie in the potty for the first time tonight! Who would have thought that such an event would have had two 40-somethings jumping up and down and clapping with glee? We are, of course, convinced that she is a prodigy, especially since she got up from the potty and went to the toilet and attempted to flush it right afterwards. Clearly, she understands the protocol of this entire pooping enterprise. That’s our girl.

How can so much joy come in such a little package?
