Hey everybody, I bring you a break from my normal whacko routine to talk about something serious. (Don't get scared!)
This is my high-school friend Claire Everhart. For those of you who were with this programme when I was in high school, the fact that I just put the words "high school" and "friend" next to each other in a sentence with her name in it should tell you a lot about her character. For those of you who weren't with this programme, let me sum up: I was the laughingstock of the whole high school. Openly being my friend and standing up for me meant Claire put her own social being at risk on a routine basis--just for sitting with me at lunch and making me part of her homework group.
Claire is currently living in Palestine/Israel, working with
Fairtrade International. Fairtrade's mission is to make sure that impoverished families across the globe--farmers, craftsmen, and other working-class people--are able to obtain fair working conditions and prices for the goods they produce. Claire has taken an interest in this line of work ever since I've known her, to the point that I distinctly remember getting a card from her one Christmas containing a pair of Fairtrade earrings and a little picture showing me the family that received the chickens she purchased in my name through Heifer International. "Everyone deserves a fighting chance" isn't just a slogan I've heard her throw around once or twice--it's her entire way of life.
Unfortunately, Claire's work in the Israel-Palestine area is going to be cut short by the length of her visa; Israel isn't too keen on letting the Palestinians get help. If you've got some time and a desire to learn, would you consider clicking over to
her blog and helping to maximize the impact of her time there--by learning, by donating, by getting involved any way you can?
Loves!
