You know, every once in awhile, things fully restore my faith in humanity. Usually it is at the lowest point, teetering on the brink of utter evil, horror, depression, oppression, and despair.
This post is spreading around the internet. People are e-mailing it to friends and family. It was
posted on Atrios. It was
posted on BoingBoing (by
fontosaurus!). Worried about the prohibitive cost of an entire bouquet,
this guy set up a PayPal donation thinger so people could collectively buy bouquets.
I'm also fascinated by the power of people I am close to and even know. This started in Minnesota! This was internet-driven, but by people I know, actually know. I know
fontosaurus not only online, but in person! It's incredible. And the scope of this is so wonderful...it reminds people that we are truly connected now, all over. This meme gets posted, then spread, then goes offline, and now we have reporters contacting people about it, and workers from the flower shops commenting with their thanks. Hell, people who receive flowers are posting pictures of them!
deepsicks e-mailed me after she read my earlier post, and I think she summed it up well (also, she called me an internet addict):
"i saw the post about flowers for couples getting married in san fran, and thought it was awesome. but i didn't feel comfortable with the cash flow as such. then i went to a bar to watch a friend's band... and found $55 on the floor. which i pocketed. then came home. and paypaled that full amount to the guy with the "flowers for al and don" site (which i'm trusting very much is not a scam... though i would've liked to specify "best wishes from minneapolis" just to reprasent. that would've involved using a phone, though ; ).
my thoughts/feelings about this country, this culture, this life vary so dramatically, and easily, too, it's almost more than i can take (the ups and downs) but i couldn't take it otherwise--the low upon low upon low without a glimpse of hope, compassion, awareness and pure fucking love."
