Side Story #03: The First Encounter
The first time Edward opened a Hogwarts library book, it tried to take a bite out of him.
Professor McGonagall was there to witness it- she was the one given the task of acquainting him with the library. She walked him around each sector and at the end of the tour, she showed him to the restricted section.
Of all the books that were in there, he had to choose the Biting Book. The second the clamp came undone, the edges broke free and chomped away. Thankfully, Edward had enough common sense to drop the book, thus rendering it harmless.
He took a deep breath, pointed at the now-dormant mass of paper and leather coverings, and asked, "Are all books like that?"
No, she informed him crisply, you just happen to have the worst luck of any newcomer librarian in Hogwarts history. But she granted him a smile that didn't show often, as he would soon learn.
Then, after conjuring a list of How to Avoid Getting Screamed at/Cursed/Mutilated/Injured/Irreversibly damaged by Books in the Restricted Section, she left him to do his own work.

After that incident, two weeks passed before Edward would venture back in the Restricted Section- just long enough for him to memorize the entire list so he wouldn't accidentally kill himself.
During those two weeks, Edward had to get used to dragons coming to life to fly around until a specific page turn and shimmering rainbow text that hurt his eyes. But after all that, he decided that books would be awfully boring when he got back to Amestris.
