Yesterday we did an Academic Team reunion of sorts--an alumni match against the current team. Nina, one of my extra little sisters, saw me and ran up and hugged me and said "Sarah, I love you, but go home." ;) We...sort of kicked their asses. Lisa and Joey and Stephanie and I were pretty awesome, and I got to be on the team with Lisa, which was fun. Since our strengths overlap a lot, we never played the same half of a match.
We got to the last question, and the coach paused, gave me a Look, and said, "Sarah, you're not even allowed to answer this one." So I set my buzzer down all contritely, and she said, "This massive multivolume reference work--"
And Lisa buzzed in. Because the answer was the Oxford English Dictionary--my Final Jeopardy question! And the best part? The coach didn't even know that when she said I couldn't answer. She just figured that the library girl would know the reference work automatically. ;)
Afterward, Stephanie did her friend-gathery magic and we all went to LaRosa's. I thought it might be kind of weird, since there was a five-year age span among the five of us--Josh is 23, I'm not quite 25, Steph and Joey are 25, and Ryan's 28. Ryan was a senior when we were freshmen, so we didn't really even know him all that well when we were on the team together. And yet we wound up dawdling in the pizza place for two hours, then going to UDF (yes, we get our ice cream cones at gas stations--doesn't everyone?) for a further couple of hours, just sitting around talking about random stuff. It was completely comfortable and fun and we got all the gossip about who's married and who's got kids and what drama is going on in the school system. (Hint: Lots.) We actually could have hung out longer--there were vague plans to go buy a random board game at Walmart--but Lisa is having a crazy hectic Christmas and we wanted to visit with her for a little while.
And then today I did most of my shopping, wrapped everything, put some ornaments on the tree, and got my hair cut. (I should have bought whatever shampoo she used. I keep shaking my head just so that I can smell my hair. It probably looks very silly.)
And since it's 2am now, I can say, in the words of the Grinch--"Tomorrow is Christmas. It's practically here!" :D
