Summer means
it's never the big dogs
but the small dogs who yap
and chase
and yap
and chase
and collapse at the edge of the property
panting
secure in the knowledge they've done their job.
Big dogs lay in the shade
and raise their heads
and woof a promise
that they'll chase you when it's cooler.
