for the show Stargate: Atlantis
Everybody Wants to Rule the World by Tears for Fears
This song was popular back when the Ancients were around. Welcome to your life; there's no turning back; even while we sleep, we will find you; Acting on your best behavior, turn your back on mother nature; everybody wants to rule the world.
Marchin' On by OneRepublic
There's so many wars we fought, there's so many things were not, but with what we have, I promise you that we're marching on. This song encapsulates the spirit on Atlantis. They have fought so much, but they keep marching on, keep fighting the good fight. They never give up, not in the face of the Wraith or adversity or any other hidden enemy. They soldier on.
Starlight by Muse
This song fits to the Atlantis expedition as a whole (as well as the show). It has an upbeat rhythm and soaring vocals, but they lyrics tell a different story. The lyrics hold the hope that the expedition had for their journey, and their continuing belief, but they also present the difficulties they encounter and the constant threats they are under from both inside and outside Atlantis. Particularly relevant lyrics: I'll never let you go - If you promise not to fade away - Never fade away
for Laura Cadman
Bad Influence by Pink
Laura seems like she would be a party girl until she found her calling in the Marines. She still likes to have fun and party and as well as her duty, doing both very well.
for Jennifer Keller
Girl Overboard by Girls Aloud
I thought this song was apt for Keller, at least when she first came to Atlantis and during her first few missions. She was really thrown in at the deep end in First Strike and also found herself a fish out of water during Missing.
White Houses by Vanessa Carlton
This song fits Jennifer Keller, who is out in the universe for the first time, before she's even really had a chance to experience Earth. She's both optimistic and overwhelmed. The song itself has a fairly simple rhythmic background, allowing the clarity of her thoughts to ring out clearly and unimpeded. Particularly relevant lyrics: I feel so far from where I've been - So I go, and I will not be back here again
for Alison Porter
Hey Pretty by POE
Dr. Porter has very little screen time, but I think there's a lot going on with her... This is a good song to illustrate there's more to her than meets the eye.
for the scientists
I am a Scientist by the Dandy Warhols
This song is just perfect for the scientists on Atlantis! Especially Radek and Rodney - and yes, even Kavanagh!
for Acastus Kolya
Like a Stone by Audioslave
This song seems particularly fitting for Kolya, a man who is determined to save his people from the Wraith, and who is willing to do anything to do so. The chorus also expresses his desire to be in Atlantis and to take out John while he is there. Particularly relevant lyrics: I was lost in the pages - of a book full of death - reading how we'll die alone - In your house I long to be - room by room patiently - I'll wait for you there
for bug!John
Creature Fear by Bon Iver
This song is for John as he turns into a bug, which parallels his changes. The calmer sections, with almost a gentle back and forth sway, are John as he is himself while he's in control. The chorus, with the strike of sound and the sudden increase in voices is John as he is overwhelmed by the bug dna. Particularly relevant lyrics: So many foreign worlds - So ready for us - The creature fear
for Ford's men
Flying High In A Friendly Sky by Marvin Gaye
This group of people was controlled by the addiction to Wraith enzyme; although the show doesn't really give us a insight into their thoughts, I imagine this song reflects some of what they might have felt.
for Michael the Hybrid
Blood Makes Noise by Suzanne Vega
I'd like to help you doctor, yes I really really would - But the din in my head, it's too much and it's no good - But blood makes noise - It's a ringing in my ear - Blood makes noise - And I can't really hear you - In the thickening of fear While he's still human, Michael seems like he really wants to figure this all out. He just can't figure out what to do, and he's not sure why, but he feels like there's something stopping him from being what he's told is himself.
Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid
Part Wraith, part man--Michael just wants to be part of their world. And if he can't, he'll kill them all.
You Know My Name by Chris Cornell
Soon after the show introduces us to Michael, he must have wondered "am I a killer?" How much of his path after that was a choice and how much of it was his Wraith nature? Would he have done anything differently if he could have known in advance how things would end for him?
for Katie Brown/Rodney McKay
No Need to Argue by The Cranberries
This song makes me think of Rodney and Katie after they have split up and he's finally realised it's over. I see the argue part more in the 'he's not going to argue/try and convince her to give him another chance' sort of way. And since 'Sunday' and some of the things he says to her in that episode, I have a feeling he always felt like he would lose her. *pets him* In fact, his pessimistic view of their relationship in 'Quarantine' is probably what killed it.
for Chuck Campbell/Radek Zelenka
Folder by Plastic Operator
It's so hard to have a secret crush. Especially when you're shy. But when you know everything there is to know about the computer systems of Atlantis, getting a message across isn't so difficult. That's why I copy and paste into your folder, folder with your name - it'd be more than I can take, if I just told you, told you what I feel - that's why I copy and paste into your folder...
for Samantha Carter & Rodney McKay
Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better from Annie Get Your Gun
Carter and McKay--allies often, friends rarely, competition always.
for Jennifer Keller/Rodney McKay
Are You Going to Kiss Me or Not by Thompson Square
Are we gonna do this or what? - I think you know I love you a lot - I think we've got a real good shot - Are you gonna kiss me or not? Rodney never does anything quickly. It doesn't matter if it's refiguring a computer or wooing a girl. His compulsive need to be right means that he checks and double-checks his figures until he knows for sure that what he's doing will be successful. The problem in that is that loves isn't always so cut and dry and sometimes it's better just to shut up and kiss the girl, letting everything else work itself out along the way.
