[Arrival] Not exactly what she was expecting - OTA

Oct 30, 2010 00:44

On the journey from New York to Washington, Haylie had a lot on her mind. Like how they found her in the first place. Or why the hell the people who seemed to hate mutants wanted to recruit her to the military. But, then again, she was a walking weapon. So... scratch that second part. Once the car pulled into the base, however, she was shaken from ( Read more... )

Crossing over to the recently arrived vehicle Ethan was not the least bit surprised to see the soldiers designated for the escort were attempting to flirt with the newest arrival. They were not the ones he had requested to be sent by the General but instead some lower grade regular military boys.

"Stand down soldiers and return to your base immediately." Pulling rank Ethan took little pleasure in seeing them all scatter, after they'd saluted their superior and uttered quick apologies with a sir, yes sir thrown in.

Waiting till they'd gone Ethan addressed Collins. "I am Captain Sykes, military personnel incharge of this camp. You must be Collins. If you'd like to follow me I'll take you to your accomodation quarters and give you a tour."

As ever Ethan was polite, texan drawl tugging at his words but very much to the point.

Haylie observed the interactions before her curiously until Sykes addressed her. Her response to his politeness was a mixture of surprise and suspicion, and it showed on her face as she cocked a brow.

"Which are you, Captain?" She asked, her stunningly green eyes meeting his directly. She wasn't intentionally trying to appear standoffish; it just tended to happen with her. Haylie blamed it on being a New Yorker.

Despite the question, which didn't so much as surprise Ethan but infuriate him a little, he kept an impassive expression. "If you are enquiring as to whether I am a mutant or merely a soldier Collins you'll be satified to know that every member of this team, with the exception of General Stone and Major Stryker, is a mutant. The soldiers serving this section of Fort Wenachee however are merely human but have been handpicked by me."

With a cursory glance towards where the soldiers from earlier had gone. "Apart from them. I did not choose them."

Hopefully that would keep her satisfied.

Chewing on her lip absently, she slung her black gym bag over her shoulder and followed Sykes' line of sight to the soldiers from earlier. Her nose wrinkled slightly in disgust. "That's comfortin' to hear. I was about five seconds away from showin' them why they don't wanna get up in my personal space."

Pausing to consider how that sounded, she looked back at the Captain. She held up a gloved hand before he could speak. "I don't need powers to do that, either."

"Of course." Ethan might have said the words but he didn't exactly sound convincing. "Now I think it would be best if I escorted you to your accomodation building; you'll be in Jefferson Hall, third room room three-oh-seven. Currently you are rooming alone but that might change."

Handing over a booklet, ID badge and pass card Ethan continued to stride towards the Jefferson Hall building. "You are required to wear the issued uniform at all times. A list of all the rules can be found in your welcome pack. You need to sign the back page and hand it over when you give in your additional personal effects to the holding centre. Failure to do so will result in punishment."

Holding the door open to the building Ethan paused, gaze quickly taking in Collins. "You'll also, in future, remember to address me as Sir or Captain. As you've only just arrived I won't be pressing for more formality right now."

And that is Captain Ethan Sykes for you.

Haylie accepted the items from Sykes without any fuss and looked them over as she kept pace with him. "Does this thing come with a map?" No, that wasn't sarcasm. She was serious.

As they reached the building, however, Haylie stepped into the doorway and turned to face Sykes once more when he spoke up. "I'll try to keep that in mind, Captain."

That was Haylie's own style of showing respect. And he was earning it a lot more quickly than most people.

"Yes there is actually, though if you happen to get lost just stop one of the soldiers on patrol and ask them for guidance. All of the men within this compound have been handpicked by me because they are," he seemed at a loss for a suitable word for a moment. "For lack of a better description, mutant friendly."

It was nice to hear someone at least offering to make an effort which is a damn sight better than some of those she'll be calling team mates. "Appreciated Collins. Lunch is served between 12:00 and 14:00 hours but tea, coffee, drinks and snacks are served throughout the day. I'm afraid the hot water is shut off currently but if you go over to the West Point Training Centre there will still be enough water for a half decent shower though the pressure is nowhere as decent as the dorms. Is there anything else you want to know?"

Haylie listened closely to everything the Captain had said, making various sorts of mental notes as he spoke and when she felt that it was alright to speak, she did so. "I think that's it for now, sir. Thank you."

See? Haylie could be a good little soldier when given enough to work with. Her mother would shoot her if she found out that her eldest daughter didn't respect the chain of command.
