So. Monday afternoon. Like always, I was applying for work on all the different jobs sites, looking for anything that I not only am suited for (generally speaking, customer service/retail), but also wouldn't hate doing. I know that I can't really afford to be picky, but life is also too short to waste it wanting to kill myself every day just for a paycheque, so I go through every job ad trying to match my skills to my interests.
Among the things I submitted a resume to, I applied for this boutique (half consignment, half new), which is about five minutes walking distance from my apartment. Sounds great! The next morning, the owner calls me at 9:30am and we set up an interview for later that morning. Psyched, I get out of bed, eat, shower, throw on buisness clothes and my wig (yes, I have a wig-- I have somewhat unusually coloured hair, and through trial and error, hiding it under a high-quality wig makes a significant difference in how some prospective employers treat me in interviews), and I head down there. The interview goes really well! They actually own two clothing stores in the same building, and the other is all brand new fashions. They're looking for someone who can work part time in both stores, therefore combined to be full time. This is exactly what I am looking for.
The interviewer calls me a few hours later, asking me to come back the next day to do some on-the-job training, as the second part of the process. She hadn't even mentioned this was a possibility during the interview, so I got the feeling they must have really liked me. I go in, and things are going so well that they keep me longer than we'd discussed. Turns out, it's kind of a tie-breaker between me and someone else. They were also 'auditioning' someone else in the store later in the afternoon, and the owner hoped to make the decision by the end of the day (last night). Now it's today, and she either hasn't decided, or at least, hasn't called yet.
Now, while waiting to hear from this 2-part intense interview for this full-time gig, my phone just rang. It wasn't them.
Instead, I was just offered a part-time/possibly-maybe-full for a temporary position over at my old mall, which is half an hour away by bus. This is without an interview, based solely just my awesome combination of cover letter, resume and included photos. And yes, before you might think, "WTF, pictures?!!", here's the deal: it's for a HALLOWE'EN COSTUME STORE. I thought it would help my case to show a few examples of the elaborate costumes I've put together over the last couple of years, and it worked! :D
Guys, this is Hallowe'en! My favourite holiday of the year. I would be incredibly amazingly perfect for this job, and the girl who called was so regretful that she hadn't read my resume earlier. She wants to give me full-time but because I wasn't at the top of the inbox, so at this point she's already hired a few full-time people, and so doesn't know if she can give the hours to me until closer to Hallowe'en. Besides which, it's only seasonal, so come November 1st I wouldn't just be bummed that Hallowe'en was over, but also unemployed again. This was the issue I always ran into with employment in previous years, as a tour guide working til the end of the season (no tourists = no job). I'd then have to go through all the red-tape shit to re-activate my Employment Insurance claim, and naturally I'd be worried about that money based on how long it took for me to get it after being terminated from my last job at the end of June (it took me just over two MONTHS-- I've only just gotten my second cheque yesterday).
I was honest and explained to this new potential employer that I was really looking for guaranteed full time, and still waiting to hear back from this other place, which she totally understood. I took the girl's name and number (she sounded my age or younger than me, I don't mean "girl" in a derogatory way) and promised to call her back as soon as I find out what the deal is with this other job.
If I don't get the boutique job close to my place, I will be sadfaced. IT'S SO CLOSE BY, you guys. I am not keen on buying bus tickets ($18 for 10) or a pass ($60 for a month) again, but at least I would be able to start with this Hallowe'en place immediately. She honestly said "you could start TODAY, we really need people to help get set up", which would be a great way to meet everyone. And while working with fun costumes would only be for a month and a half, it would still be get me out of the apartment (so long, cabin fever!) and allow me plenty of time to continue looking for something permanent on the off-hours.
AAAAAAAAARRRGGH.
*annoyed flail*
JUST CALL ME, PLEASE.
EDIT! After two busy signals, I finally got through on a call-back 24 hours later (I felt that was a legitimate amount of time to wait for their decision after being told it would be determined yesterday?) and now suddenly there are two more applicants that I'm competing against (also being brought in for trial runs.)
So, now I have to wait until late tomorrow afternoon to find out. Any suggestions on how I should handle the second position? Should I call them in the morning to say I'm still waiting, or just wait until later in the day after I've heard the decision from the full-time job so that I'm not pestering them with phone calls?
