Richard Cypher watched as Kahlan slept. It was his turn to stand watch. He had only known her a few weeks, but this woman had already wormed her way into his soul. Her beauty was what he had noticed first, of course, but it hadn't taken long for him to realize that she was so much more than just that. She was braver than anyone he had ever known. She had sacrificed so much to do what she knew was right. It had taken the loss of his father for Richard to be willing to fight in this war, but Kahlan fought for her people. Where anyone else would have been blinded by grief at the loss of a sister, she had continued on in Dennee's name. And now, he knew, she had been sacrificing her whole life. She was a confessor. She had been taught to put duty before all else, and she had done so with her whole being. The Midlands had been lucky to have such a woman, and Richard was lucky to have her at his side.

Knowing how much Kahlan had lost and how much she continued to sacrifice made Richard feel guilty. Because he would give almost anything to be with her. Part of him, a part larger than he wanted to admit, would be willing to give it all up, would be willing to be confessed, just for the chance to be with her. He knew he was being irrational. It was impossible to be so in love with someone after so little time. And it was hardly worth it to lose everything that he was, to be unable to fight and defeat Darken Rahl, just to be with Kahlan. And yet his hard still longed to be hers. Richard would not let his heart cloud his reason. He would not give in to the temptation, and he knew Kahlan would never give in and allow it. She was stronger than he could ever hope to be.

So, Richard would continue on. He would battle and he would win. Yet he would fight as much for her as for his father and for justice and to see the end of tyranny. And he would allow that small part of him to hope that someday they would find a way to be together.

Kahlan took in a deep breath and paced a few yards away from the camp her and Richard had created in Zedd’s absence. The wizard had gone to hide one of the Boxes of Orden, leaving her and the Seeker alone to go forth with their own journey.

However, her thoughts were elsewhere.

He was sleeping soundly when she left him, rationalizing to herself that she needed to patrol and that they couldn’t afford to both be resting when an enemy could appear at any moment. It was a lie, she knew. Her feelings for him were growing stronger by the day, to the point where she had to try to keep her heart from hammering inside her chest. To the point where she couldn’t look him in the face, could barely choke out a few words. She knew that he was becoming suspicious, but she couldn’t help it.

Since the moment they first met, when he tried to help her up and she held a dagger to his throat, she was a goner. And she had known it too. That’s what scared her so much about him being the Seeker, the connection that had already been established.

He was making her crazy without even realizing it. She was afraid he’d see it in her face, her eyes, her stance, her words. Or, recently, lack there of.

She never had to deal with feelings like this sort before, and she had no idea how she got stuck in this situation.

She smiled and tried to act like everything was alright, but all she wanted to do was bury herself in his arms, press her face to his neck. And the worst part was that she knew he wouldn’t have the slightest objection.

Because he had no idea how strongly she really felt about him. And he would never know. Because she was a Confessor, and she had a duty, a responsibility.

Yet, deep down, she knew that he felt the same way. And that’s what pained her above all else.

I never stick, so how'd you get me stuck in this

Summary: What was gained is now lost to her again, lost to time and tide.


She dreams of Dennee, and in her dreams everything is so clear and real, crystal bright and just as fragile. She sees her sister as last she saw her, a resolute and pale face shining in the early evening light, fierce and free, and Kahlan's heart leaps just as fiercely at the sight of her.

The water laps against the shore - she can hear the hushing rush of it from where she stands, so close to the water's edge, as close to Dennee as she can get without sinking, without drowning. The waves slap against the side of Dennee's boat, too, a hollow sound against the wooden boards, and Kahlan's heart is both full and empty.

What was gained is now lost to her again, lost to time and tide, to the vagaries of fate and a monster's need for power. But what was lost was found, and will be found again.

In dreams, at least.

Dennee smiles softly at her and the shrill cries of the seagulls overhead are echoed in Kahlan's heart.

The scent of salt brine hangs in the air and Kahlan tastes it on her tongue, in her throat, stinging in her eyes. She holds back the tide that rises up, holds tightly to her last sight of her sister before the sea swallows her up. Each stroke of the oar, each surge of the boat through the surf takes her sister further away from her, and Kahlan is left adrift and floundering in her wake.

She holds tight, holds so tight, as tightly as she can, but it is still not enough; when she wakes and remembers, there is salt water on her face and a hole in her heart where Dennee used to be.

Let your heart go where the wind takes it

A flash of white in the woods. The troubled expression upon her face. Who knew that these were the things that would change Richard Cypher’s life. Since he took up the name of Seeker, fears plagued his head. Just the fact alone that he would have to leave him homeland. He had never traveled farther then the woods in surrounding Westland and soon he would be crossing the boundary into a whole other land, a land of magic no less. But Richard knew that this was his duty, his calling, and he would take on the responsibility for the fate humanity.

These were the things he thought of late at night, long after the others had doused off, the wood on the campfire was just smoldering, and Zedd’s snores filled the air. How different would his life would be if he was back in Hartland. His father would still be alive, his brother would not have betrayed him, he would have a simple life. Yet it was the little smile upon her face when he did something silly that made it alright. Or the look she sometimes gave him when she thought he wasn’t looking. All he had to do was see her face, and know that this is where he was suppose to be.
