Saturday dawned puffy clouded but bright. We breakfasted on toadmade blueberry oatmeal pancakes, turkey sausage links and bacon. We then decided to heat torture ourselves and take down the remaining hurricane boards since Emily remained south and nobody else has shown up to the party in the Atlantic yet.
I figured we should leave the boards up to keep the heat out, but toad insisted it makes the house look like crap. I'm for painting them this autumn so they look like shutters. I enjoyed the bathroom and kitchen boards which were used as a buffet table for the wedding, and for toad's train platform. He's got a whole town with lighted buildings so he's drilled tiny circles large enough for the plug and cords to fit through. This gives us a way to peek out. Light also pokes through making it look as if they have glow in the dark circles on them. Kewl beans.
I recall Ed and Les saying how dark and impossible it was to know what was going on outside with their hurricane protection in place. Now in a few places we can peek out. That's if we ever stay. Usually toad's decided to fly away thereby saving a plane from possible smashing. This last trip we did not have to pay for the fuel since we were providing a service to the company. Nifty!
Dennis cost us some screws, some cat downers, and a head of broccoli on the "quick what was your hurricane outlay". Ivan was far more destructive, in fact, we've not gotten all the damage to the roof repaired since our job is so tiny and not leaking. Roofers are busy fixing people with real problems. I figure if another storm trashes another section of the roof we'll be closer to replacing the whole thing anyway. Not being a builder i'm not sure how bad the roof shingles really are, but the storm damage adjuster said too bad it didn't call for replacing most of the roof. The gutters are continually full of little stones from the shingles. I don't think it's a 30 year roof.
Toad riveted the new gutter corner in place from his tri fold ladder. I got to be rivet hander girl. Very exciting.
We then mowed the front crecent and the west side. The neighbor's lawn service came with their gas/oil powered machines and i fled inside.
Toad decided a shower and then a nap were in order. We did not make it to the six pm balloon liftoff. Later he went out and picked up chinese. Yum. Then he took another nap.
Sunday we breakfasted on leftovers, toad read the paper, i started The Copper Beech. Toad wanted to get his hair cut so I called dad while he showered. We drove to the outdoor mall but the hair cutters is now closed on Sundays. Harry Potter called to toad, as well as a ringo disk. We headed to the bookstore. Ringo's album wasn't available so they ordered it. At least they had HP, as if any bookshop wouldn't.
We walked along Daphne's section of Mobile Bay with some sun, some clouds and a great 12 mph wind. I love wind. At that speed it's nearly enough to get the wench off the ground. We haven't flown the kites yet this year.
Back home we had the rest of the chinese and toad read the first chapter after I read the first page.
This morning I recalled bits and pieces of some very intense dreams which kept waking me up last night. Beats me what's going on, nothing very exciting here to be causing that kind of wakefullness. Not much in the way of stress, except i don't know what type of career besides scribbling I plan to do.
After a protein shake toad made I decided to rest for another half an hour. I was awakened to a male voice yelling in the house saying "Father!" As usual toad had closed the garage and nobody was visually present. The kids next door are off at camp. They don't call their dad "Father" anyway. He's over a few times a month, but he doesn't live there. The kids behind are high school and college aged. I'm not sure what they call him, but the sound of the voice seemed to be from IN.
At eight am a fed ex truck stopped at the front door. It's a glucose meter sent by a company. I'll have to check the price of strips for that particular one.
I then decided to finish mowing the grass. I even hacked at the overgrown vines planted by the former owners. I did not hit the poison ivy studded natural area much. I came in about ll:45.
After showering i still felt hot. I had some yoghurt, strawberries, walnuts and granola and two iced coffees. Nap! my body screamed. Nah! get over it. So after watching foodnetwork and learning from Emeril how to make n'awlins cream cheese i decided that even Rachael Ray couldn't keep me awake. One 15 minute non sleeping nap later I felt much better.
The clouds are here from Emily but there's not much wind at all unfortunately. I was hoping for some so we could walk again on the bay with a breeze.
Toad said he was getting his hair cut on the way home so i'll throw dinner on the grill when he gets here.
There are three remaining lemons on the meyer's lemon tree. We had many fall off before they were larger than a shelled peanut. I don't know why.
