3 interests and 3 icons

And it is my turn for the LJ trend of the moment.  Please comment and I'll pick three of your interests and three of your icons for you to explain in your journal (but try to remember send me the link).  You're welcome to pick another three of mine as well.

This is a picture of several volumes of the English translation of Ma'em Lo'ez.  It was originally written in the 1700's by Yaakov Culi and his students in Constantinople.  Torah study was at an all time low among the non Hebrew speaking populace, especially after a leader of the people converted to Islam by way of the Turkish sword.  Ma'em Lo'ez was written in Ladino, a sort of mostly Spanish words spelled with Hebrew letters or a Sephardic version of Yiddish.  The Ladino lanugage as well as the clarity and simplicity of the words without compromising the complexity or details of Torah was accessable to men as well as women and children causing a much needed religous revival at the time.  Often shop owners would keep a version to study during slow days at work.  The pages of the Exodus volume where the Passover Haggadah is included was covered in food and wine stains just like my Childrens Artscroll Edition. The series covers the entire Torah, oral Torah, laws, customs, kabbalah, rabbinic teachings, and various other writings such as Megillah Esther for Purim and the Book of Ruth.  Everything is smoothly intertwined covering the texts, line by line, with codes and explantions for patterns, numerology, letters appearing as they do, and Jewish law explained through the stories.  The works were eventually translated into Hebrew and from the Hebrew translated into English do to the lack of complete copies of the Ladino editions and Ladino translators still alive.  Still I feel it has retained that magical voice.

I'm a novel reader by nature and can recall stories I've read years ago from the names and clients of the Baby-Sitter's Club to passages of The Poisonwood Bible yet a grammar guide or Microsoft user guide won't remain in my brain. Unfortunitely neither will a similarly written book on blessings or Shabbat observance. So I am forever greatful to the Me'am Lo'ez series which tells stories so beatifully in a way in which I can retain, treasure, and continually be amazed by its teachings.

This is my dog Strawberry, a tiny Shih Tzu or Chinese Imperial as they are now called.  Her coloring is "red" in the dog fur world, hence the name.  Basically my mom came to visit, bringing her similar puppy, I said "oooooh I want one" and that's what I got. Sometimes I wish I didn't have the responsibility, still I feel she kept me out of trouble, getting me to come home at night, when I would have otherwise stayed out.  She had puppy hair in the picture, but now I can't grow it out that long without tangles.  I do keep her in quite a wardrobe including decorative collars and a strawberry charm from Aldo.  Yeah, I am one of those people...but in my defense I always was.  At three years old I had a pug named Sally who I would dress up in my baby dresses and push the poor thing around in my doll stroller when I am sure she preferred to walk.

This is an embarrassingly, terrible user icon.  The caption reads "May Flower" which I fancy myself since I was born in May and always loved skipping around the May Pole holding my streamer on May Day in preschool.  In the picture it is actually my August wedding, but I still got to stand on a chair, holding the parasol as the women danced around me.  What's a Jewish wedding without shtick?  Costumes, silly jester style dancing, confetti filled balloons to pop, jump robe, etc are all meant to entertain and honor the bride and groom.  The parasol was made by my four sister-in-laws and actually comes from the lovely idea of taking the white sheet stained with my virgin blood and dancing around it.  I prefer the modern take.

Chafetz Chayim
is a typo or transliteration error I am sooo glad you pointed out. Chofetz Chaim means "one who desires life" and is the first book written by R' Yisroel Meir Hakohen 1838-1933 of Poland, now called the Chofetz Chaim.  Yes, that is 95 years of desiring life. He is probably best known for writing the Mishna Berurah.  These are the books by which Ashkenazi Jews guide their everyday life, holidays, and all observances and are based on the Shulchan Arach, which is also used by Chassidic and Sephardic Jews.  So putting the Chofetz Chaim under my interests is twofold; it tells someone a bit about the customs or sect I belong to and I hope it says that I truly hold dear and appreciate his teachings.  He writes about such wonderful things such as how hurtful words can be, love of kindness, and ways to remain observant while in the most un-Jewish of environments.  I have the pleasure of spending time with one of his many granddaughters and the warm, open home, full of kind words, and hospitality she hosts is (IMO) a true testament of what Judaism is all about.

Moscato d'asti
by Bartenura is just plain yummy like a light soda and at about 6% alcohol by volume you can drink it all day.

Chumash
refers to the five books of Moses/Moshe and is related to the Hebrew word "chamaysh" for five.  What can I say?  I love the Torah, I try to live by G-d's teachings, and the Chumash is just one of it's many parts.

Knowling how I want to live and actually doing it each hour of every day is something with which I struggle. Perhaps by putting all these texts and people in my profile I am reminding myself of these goals and am hoping to attract communities or other users who may educate, motivate, and inspire me.  Live Journal can keep you close to friends, teach you, or waste your time viewing other's use of Mac fluidline or laughing at the trolls to snark. I hope my interests represent the best of me.

I guess I come off as very Jewish and wordy.  Both dominate my life, but I'm working on the latter. I do also love grammar jokes, booger picking pimple popping grossness, and YELLOW.

C'mon who else wants to play?
