Math question - teaching multiplication

Apr 24, 2013 15:38

Hey all,

I am currently teaching multiplication to my grade 3/4 split class. I have several students who show understanding that multiplication means equal groups and who can draw a picture or array to represent a multiplication question, but who then go back to counting the dots/marks/squares one by one to get their answer. I have been reviewing skip counting and talking about using doubles to help them solve x 4 and x 6 but so far these students seem reluctant to try these kinds of strategies. We have blocks and counters available, as well as 10 frames and 100 charts.

Any suggestions for tips to help them develop more effective strategies? At 8 or 9 years old, are some of them maybe just not ready for more abstract strategies?

Also, can anyone suggest some fun games to review or drill facts to help memorize them? We play Around the World sometimes but I would love some other ideas!
