Spelling!

How can I facilitate spelling and vocabulary for younger students (like 1st and 2nd grade) without them having to run to word walls all over the room? They have lists of snap/sight words at their desks, but what about introducing new vocabulary or more complex describing words? I used a personal dictionary in the classroom- the kids were always required to have their dictionary out if they were asking for a word, and turned to the correct page, so I could put it in there for them- they could then write the definition and look it up later. Another 1st grade teacher made "picture dictionaries" with robust vocabulary from the basal adoption, and had the kids illustrate each of the three words each week, and by the end of the year they had a book of words that they could define.
