Spelling!

How can I facilitate spelling and vocabulary for younger students (like 1st and 2nd grade) without them having to run to word walls all over the room? They have lists of snap/sight words at their desks, but what about introducing new vocabulary or more complex describing words? Would it be worthwhile to take the time to have them add a list of new words to a personal dictionary (it would be really good kinesthetic practice, but is it too rote)?

What are the strategies you use in your own rooms?
