Ooh...I like all kinds of books! I love scifi,f antasy, historical fiction, nonfiction...
I kinda struggle with mysteries; they're just not my preferred genre. I even dislike those CSI/NCIS/Law&Order shows, because I just don't have the patience for the whole discovery thing. I'd make a TERRIBLE detective. :)
I'm not a big fan of chicklit. I don't like chickflics, either, really. Not that I like action films, either. I'm kinda difficult that way.
I'm kinda a drama fan, I guess.
My guilty pleasure author is Dean Koontz. Each book is pretty much the same as the last, but I know what to expect, and I'm never disappointed.
I'm not a romance fan...at all, really. (Films, either)
My favorite books from childhood are "Heidi", The "Anne of Green Gables" books, "The Secret Garden,"...yeah. That's it. And I think that I keep looking for those books as an adult, but written for adults. Does that make any sense? "Heidi" is still my all-time favorite book, ever, and I re-read it about once a year.
I'm a HUGE history buff, and the History Channel is one of the worst inventions ever, because I keep getting stuck on WHATEVER they happen to be showing when I flip past it. My mom and brother are the same. It's gotten to where we'll flip past, get stuck, and just say, "Damned History Channel." When we tell someone a cool historical fact, we look at the other and say, "Damned History Channel?" And the response is always, "Yep."
So I love nonfiction books about history. I enjoy historical fiction, but not romantic historical fiction.
Sheesh.
Am I picky enough? :) But you asked a loaded question!
I've never really been able to find my niche as an adult reader. The books for adults always seem to be lacking something for me. That something that's missing is in the Young Adult books, and I don't know what it is that's missing. I've never been COMPLETELY satisfied with an adult book in the ways that I was with so many of the books that I read when I was a kid.
...Maybe I should ask Famous why that is! I bet she'll know!
Ooh! I also LOVED "A Wrinkle in Time" from my childhood, too. But I could NEVER get into the other books in that series...I don't really know why.
If you loved "The Secret Garden", you might like Kate Morton's "The Forgotten Garden". Frances Hodgson Burnett even makes a brief appearance at a party.
One of my favorite authors wrote 2 very long (14 books total) series that are interconnected -Dorothy Dunnett. One series takes place in the 15th century and the other in the 16th. http://www.dorothydunnett.co.uk/
A current favorite author (and she has an LJ) is Rob Thurman. She writes urban fantasy and they are great especially her Cal Leandros series (2 brothers that hunt monsters but she started before SPN). Her latest is less scifi/fantasy but more a thriller about 2 brothers. http://robthurman.net/
Wen Spencer, CJ Cherryh (I love her Foreigner series which is up to 11 books so far), Carol Berg, Joan Vinge and Janny Wurts are all favorite scifi/fantasy authors.
I know you said that you didn't like mysteries but since you love history, you might like Lindsey Davis's ones. Her Marcus Didius Falco series is set in ancient Rome. The 20th one will be published later this summer. "The Silver Pigs" is the first.
A lot of the above would work - if you want more details or suggestions, email me. I love doing reader advisory.
I also recently finished up Stephen King's "Under the Dome" which my SIL gave me and enjoyed it a lot although the book was so big (over 1000 pages), that it was awkward to hold and made my wrists sore.
Thanks for linking me to her. And telling me about her books. I just finished the first one, and I'm 111 pages into the second. And I bought the last three of them today. :)
I stopped by Barnes and Noble on the way home today, but I'd forgotten my gift cards! I looked for each author that you'd recommended, and some of them weren't present at all, some of them didn't have the beginning novel of the series. But I did get the first of the Cal Leandros series. 'Cause two brothers who only have each other and fight evil/supernatural stuff? Totally up my alley. :) I love that the older brother's fiercely protective of his little bro, too. Love it. I sat down in the B&N and read about 100 pages of it. It's definitely interesting.
Since I didn't have the gift cards, I decided to put off until later the determined search for the others, especially since I'd found one today. If I love it at the end, I'll get the next in the series. Yay!
I also bought "Blessings" by Anna Quindlen which Nightrider recommended. I read about 25 pages of it, and it seemed interesting, so I got it too.
