Weekly Obbo 90(B):
“Have to get that tape.” Ray ran fingers through his already disheveled hair. His nerves were raw with worry. “Can’t believe that Bodie did that!”
The moon’s weak light illuminated the garden path leading to the double doors. Marge had assured him they’d be unlocked.
“Marge.” He shuddered. “I wonder what this favor is going to cost me.”
He and Bodie had been foolish, caught in a compromising position. “Well, several, truth be told,” he admitted to himself. They’d been sent undercover as lovers. “Not as undercover as Cowley had thought!” He snickered to himself. When the op had wrapped up, they’d been left at the country mansion to make sure everything had been secured. Bodie had wanted to take advantage of the huge bath and hot tub one last time. Ray didn’t know it at the time, but the mad bastard had also gone and put another tape into the surveillance camera in the bath. Their amorous adventure had been interrupted untimely by the cleaning crew. They had to leave in a hurry if they weren’t to be caught. Bodie hadn't had time to recover the tape. A late call that night from Marge had left Ray angry and embarrassed.
“In more than one way.” She’d teased.
Marge told him that she had dealings with their recently captured prisoner, Marcus Handley. Her contacts had warned her that CI5 was all over the mansion. She’d sent her own boys over to make sure there wasn’t any evidence implicating her in any of Marcus’ activities.
“Protecting her assets”, she’d said. “along with yours and your partner’s… the lout.” She’d laughed at his dismay.
While there, her boys ran into some of Handley’s boys looking very smug. They were told that a video tape had been found in the house that would be very interesting to anyone who wanted to knock CI5 down a step or two. They were told the tape had captured two of the agents in an awkward situation and the tape would be used to try to free their boss. Handley’s boys had shown a bit of the tape to them and knowing their boss’s interest in the curly haired CI5 man they’d hurried back to tell her. Marge told Ray she called in a few favors and found out where the tape was.
After the call from Marge, he’d been furious with Bodie. He’d gone over to Bodie’s flat and the dumb crud had laughed at him, taunting him about Marge coming to his rescue. He tossed some angry words at Bodie and stormed off. Bodie didn’t seem to see the seriousness of the video tape. Ray was afraid they’d lose their jobs; a job he’d come to love despite all his complaints. A job that defined him.
That was how he found himself sitting in the bushes in front of Handley’s London house. The moon was long gone behind clouds that came with a strong wind and heavy rain. He had lost track of how long he’d been sitting waiting for the last of the lights to go out in the house. His hands and face were raw with the cold and he’d started to shiver.
“Catch me death, I will and all because of that sodding Bodie.”
“Oi! Watch who you’re maligning, Sunshine.” Ray jumped as Bodie’s warm hand clamped on his shoulder.
“What are you doing here, Bodie?” He hissed. “Thought this was all a joke to you.”
“Was Ray. Until I realized how much this upset you. I’m sorry, mate. I’m here now.” Bodie cringed as the heated glare from green eyes raked over him.
“Guess I could use some help.” Sounding less than sincere, Ray sighed.
Bodie’s face lit up.
“Berk.” Ray nudged his partner’s shoulder as the now smiling man knelt down beside him.
“Bit cold here.” Bodie noted. Ray knew Bodie had felt the shivers running through him. “Let’s get this done and then I can warm you up!” Bodie rubbed his hands together in anticipation.
“And isn’t that what got us into this in the first place?” Ray smiled in spite of himself.
Bodie ruffled his hair. “Yeah, keeping you warm does seem to lead to trouble…”
“Geroff!” He shrugged out from under Bodie’s hand. He looked to his partner. “How did you know I was here?”
“Your girlfriend called me, didn’t she?”
“My girl…” He groaned. “Marge?” He knew he’d never live this down. He heard Bodie snicker.
They were both surprised as the lights suddenly turned off. They waited, pressed against each other for warmth, in the bushes for another hour to let the household settle into sleep. As always in these situations, Ray reveled in the ease in which the two of them could just sit together in silence. He had never been so comfortable with anyone in his life. Somehow, this mad ex-mercenary had snuck in behind the walls he’d built and strengthened through years of hurt, rejection and loneliness. Bodie had breached the barrier and now the walls were held together with love. They were there now, to keep Bodie in.
“Ray?” Bodie’s whisper brought him back. He hadn’t realized he’d drifted off. The concern in Bodie’s voice soothed his raw emotions. He opened his eyes and looked at his lover. He saw his own feelings reflected in those deep blue eyes. He gripped Bodie’s hand tightly and squeezed once. “Let’s go.”
He crept toward the doors, Bodie’s hand resting comfortably on the small of his back. As Marge had promised, the doors were unlocked. He’d worry later about how she’d arranged that. They made their way silently through the doors and into a study. The video tape was supposed to be in a locked compartment in the desk.
Marge had said the tape was to be used for blackmail. Handley didn’t know George Cowley if he thought he’d get anything that way. But his agent did. They knew they were expendable and would be sacrificed without a second thought if CI5 was compromised. Their public embarrassment would be a small price to pay to keep CI5 clear. They knew this and accepted it. But they also knew they would do just about anything to keep Cowley from being put in the position of having to defend CI5. They knew it without having to say a word to each other. But for Ray there was another reason, a stronger reason for the breaking and entry tonight. His partner was a very private man. Ray didn’t want the tape to become public, didn’t want their CI5 mates to see what they were to each other. It was between only them and he was going to make sure it stayed that way. There were many doors in Bodie’s soul and he opened them to others reluctantly. There were doors that Ray himself would never dare to open. The relationship the two had formed was new and still locked behind one of those doors. Ray wasn’t going to let anyone else in.
They started searching the desk for the hidden door. Ray ran his hands over the intricate carvings along the side. He heard his partner exhale a loud breath, almost a chuckle.
“Got it!” Bodie grinned over at him.
Ray moved over to Bodie’s side of the desk and pulled out his lock picks. With Bodie breathing warmly down the back of his neck, he gently opened the lock. The door slid open quietly. The tape was there. Ray reached in and picked it up with shaking hands, holding it as if he expected it to explode.
“Easy Sunshine.” Bodie whispered in his ear. “Let’s close this up and get on our way.”
They made their way back out to the garden. It was still raining. Bodie moved through the dark to where he’d left his own car. Ray hadn’t followed. He knelt down in the grass and broke open the case around the tape exposing it to the rain.
“Ray!” Bodie called to him. “Finish that later, we need to go.”
They drove to Bodie’s flat. Once inside Ray settled on the floor and using the scissors in his swiss army knife, he began to cut the tape into small pieces. Bodie laughed at his efforts and handed him a real pair.
“Try these.”
Ray nodded and cut the tape into confetti sized bits. Bodie watched him with a puzzled expression.
“Ray?”
Ray grunted in response, but didn’t stop cutting.
“Ray, why does this bother you so much? You embarrassed to share the spotlight with me?”
Ray detected a note of doubt in the voice. He stopped with the scissors and looked up at his partner.
“No Bodie. Never that.” He stood up and took Bodie into his arms. He rested his forehead against Bodie’s. “What we do together…it’s nobody’s business but ours. You put on a good mask, pretending not to be bothered by this…” He let bits of the tape fall through his fingers…”but I know you mate. You’d not be happy to have this public. I want to make sure it never is.”
“Ah, Ray.” Bodie pulled back far enough to kiss him. Ray watched as his lover’s eyes lit with mischief. “Your lady friend is going to be most unhappy with you.” Bodie gestured toward the destroyed tape.
"What are you on about now?” Ray asked him.
“Your Marge. She wanted that tape, didn’t she? She wanted to see her golly in the raw!”
