I was driving to lunch the other day and I saw a green GMC truck ahead of me with a vanity license plate that read 'GRN-GMC'. It got me thinking about just how vain, yet totally uncreative some people can be. This moron wanted pay $XX.00 bucks to make a personalized statement via a fedrally mandated identification medium...and the best message they could come up with is a literal description of the object to which the message is going to be affixed. This is equivalent to wearing a black T-Shirt with the words 'Black T-Shirt printed on the back, or writing 'Cardboard Sign on a Stick' on a cardboard sign on a stick.
This is not the first license plate I have seen with such unimaginative messaging. I have seen BMW 600s's with 'BMW600S' on the tag. About 6 inches to the left (or right) of the plate, there is inevitebly a factory-made emblem that informs anyone following this car that 'Yeah, it's a BMW 600s'. The owner was obviously not content with the identification efforts the designers applied to the car, they felt the need to place an order and spend extra money to make sure that there is no mistaking what kind of car they own.
Should the car be approaching you from a forward angle, you can usually count on a 'BMW 600' self-adhesive-tinted-window-sun-shade across the top of the front windshield to help you discern just what exactly that sweet-ass car is that is making you so jealous. Is it a 570? Is it a 580? A 600 OR a 600s? God forbid you should covet a car that you have incorrectly identified. Do these people actually feel like they are doing a public service? 'My car is so unique and special - perhaps I should draw more attention to it so people won't be confused.' Or perhaps it's an attempt to stave off the incessant questions by the 'Hey, that thing got a Hemi?' type of retards that you run into at the gas station.
There are plenty of attempts at license plate creativity that are so obscure that they just confuse the driver of the car following. What the heck am I supposed to get from 'DSR DRR'? or 'LEEM 5'? If it doens't mean anyhthing to anyone but the owner of the car - what's the point?
Somewhere between the literal and the abstract, there are some vanity plates that actually make sense. Some people name their cars, (AUDREY) others honor sports teams (VIKINGS) and some are actually clever, if not pretentious (URNVS - sound it out). I realize there are only so many combinations you can make with only 7 characters with which to play, and most of the really good ones are 'off-limits' according to the Decency Police, but COME ON. If you don't have anything interesting to say, don't say anything.
You're probably thinking that I should follow that same advice myself - and you are correct! I'm done with this topic, it's boring...
