Summary: Neil takes Nagi to the cafe in an attempt to get more than 3 words out of him at a time.
Nagi did his part as far as shutting down the arcade for the night was concerned, turning all of the machines off. He let out a little sigh of relief as he turned each one off, the noise level dropping rapidly as the machines stopped one by one until they were all quiet. He leaned against the door when the last one was ready, looking back at the counter to see what his Irish coworker was up to.
Neil was making sure that everything was put away from the day of work and cleaning up. Not that there was much to put away since there wasn't any money to handle, but he cleaned off the counter and swept up a bit. Regene and his potato chips... Haro was sitting on the counter waiting until it was time to go. Neil looked up. "Everything done?" he asked.
Nagi nodded, pushing off from the door frame so he could go into the back and get his coat now that there was snow all over the place. His voice had its usual flatness, as if there was nothing that interested him. "Yes."
Neil nodded as he went to grab his coat as well. "That's good. Hey, want to go get something to drink from the cafe? My treat." Yes, when everything was free that sentiment failed, but oh well. Haro bounced off the counter and rolled to the door. "Snow!" the little robot proclaimed. "Snow!"
Nagi shrugged, it wasn't like there was anything better for him to do. "Sure." He walked into the back, ignoring the Haro as he got his coat and shrugged it on. He was getting more used to ignoring the little round robot now that he spent more time around it.
Neil sighed, hearing Haro. "Yes... there was snow this morning too." Neil gathered up his jacket and put it on as Haro rolled to the front door of the arcade to look at the snow. "Great," he said in response to Nagi's agreement.
It's not that the young assassin was exactly thrilled to be going out with someone, but he just had nothing better to do. He shrugged again, heading out to the front door and walking right out into the snow.
Neil knew he wasn't exactly thrilled, but hey it gave them a chance to talk. Neil scooped up Haro then followed Nagi out into the snow. Haro flapped but said nothing else they headed towards the cafe.
Nagi wasn't that interested in talking as he made his way through the snow, hating how it got into his shoes and made him cold. He hurried into the cafe, choosing a booth near the back of the main cafe area to sit at so his back was to a wall.
Neil let Nagi chose the place to sit, setting Haro down by the door before heading over to the table. He removed his coat as he sat down. "So... how have you been?"
"Fine." Was the curt reply as Nagi slowly shrugged off his coat, liking the warmth that it provided. He didn't have much to say, one day just seemed like every other now.
"That's good," Neil said. He looked up as the waiter walked over. He ordered himself a coffee and waited for Nagi to order.
Nagi ordered some tea, preferring that to coffee. There were some things to be said about him being Japanese, that preference just one of them. He studied the table as he sat there, feeling just a bit better now that he was warm.
"Got any plans for the holiday coming up?" Neil asked.
Nagi shook his head. Christmas wasn't really a holiday he cared about, even though they had Christmas celebrations at the orphanage. In fact, that was the only time he ever celebrated the holiday. No one in Schwarz did.
Neil nodded. "Alright." He hadn't really expected him to be doing anything. "How are you and Feldt doing with the programming for Haros?" he asked, trying to find to get Nagi to say more than one word.
Good luck to the Irishman on that one, Nagi was just his usual antisocial self. Well, usual before coming to the island, Duo had been trying to get him to open up more. "It's going well."
Couldn't blame Neil for trying. Well, he had gotten Nagi to say three words. Getting a bit better. "So what are you guys working on now?"
"Ways to keep the Haros from being an annoyance." Yes, he did actually say a complete sentence that was more than three words! Success on Neil's part.
Yes, it was a success. "That's good too," Neil remarked. "They do have a tendency to be an annoyance." As if on cue, his Haro ran into a random chair and flapped at the chair as though the chair had jumped out in front of him.
Nagi resisted the urge to facepalm, settling for shaking his head at the hapless Haro. That was why he and Feldt were trying to make them less annoying.
Neil shook his head. "Hopefully you figure that out soon," he remarked.
"Only so much we can do. I just hope enough programming gives them different things to do."
Neil nodded. "Giving them something else to do would make them less bored." He looked up as the waiter brought them their drinks.
Nagi took his tea, nodding only slightly to the waiter as he set it in front of him. He didn't have any sort of response to that, feeling that it wasn't worth it.
Neil just sipped his coffee for a moment. He had at least gotten some conversation out of Nagi. That was an accomplishment.
Nagi waited a few minutes before sipping his tea, looking down into the cup. Christmas coming meant that his birthday was coming, and this year that would mean that he would be legal to drink alcohol. And that meant only one other thing...
Neil wasn't aware that Nagi was going to be legal to drink. Even so, he wouldn't try and get Nagi to drink for his birthday.
Nagi swirled the tea in his cup a bit, the only sign that he actually had something on his mind. In truth, he was on a mental edge, and not sure how long he would stay on the 'sane' side of it.
Neil looked up. "Are you alright?" he asked.
Nagi shrugged in response, not able to really say that he was or wasn't all right. "Nothing to do."
"Ah. Anything I can help with?"
"Not unless you can fix what's messed up." Nagi admitted, looking into the tea for the leaves.
"What is wrong?" Neil asked, not sure if he could help.
Nagi glared at the tea leaves, letting his anger out just enough so it could be seen and then hidden away again.
"Maybe I shouldn't ask."
"Better if you don't."
Neil nodded. "Alright." He knew when he was getting in over his head.
Nagi sighed, glad that it seemed like the Irishman wasn't going to make him talk. He sipped his tea, looking out into the cafe now.
