When: Few days ago
Where: lagoon
Rating: G
Warnings: None really
Notes: none
Summary: Sunako runs into Pluto, and more hints get dropped.
She had withdrawn again. It was hot on the island. Really hot. Yeah, she was going to melt - but not from the beautiful creatures, just the heat. Deciding a visit to the lagoon might make her feel cooler - not to mention she'd wanted to check it out for a while anyway, she donned baggy long-sleeved black shirt and pants (never mind that wearing all black would only make her hotter), then left her hut.
Pluto had gotten off from her shift at the clothing store, and went over to the lagoon for a few moments' peace before going back to what she was thinking of as the 'Dylandy Hut'. She was thinking about putting a warning on the hut door, closing her eyes as she sat down on the sand and listened to the waves.
She paused at the edge of the lagoon upon spotting someone else there. Her first instinct was to turn and go back to her hut, but then she realized who the person was. "...Pluto." She slowly closed the distance between them.
Pluto looked up at hearing her name, then smiled at the young woman in the worst color imaginable for the day's heat. "Hello, Sunako. Perhaps you should come into the store sometime."
Sunako blinked. "The store?" There were a lot of stores. She tried to figure out which one Pluto might have meant while waiting for a response.
"The clothing store." Pluto chuckled softly, looking at the expression on the girl's face. "All black is not the best color for this island, let alone a young woman like yourself."
Her shoulders lifted and fell in a shrug that was almost invisible thanks to her baggy shirt. If she'd had anything not black, she would've worn it... maybe. "It's not as hot here by the water." Not avoiding the discussion of clothes, really...
"Perhaps not, but the color does not work for you." Pluto smiled, "You would look much prettier and even turn a few heads with a little color against your skin. Too much black makes you look like you are in mourning, and you do not seem to have anything to mourn."
Look much prettier? Turn a few heads? She shook her head. "I don't care about any of that." She sat next to Pluto, ignoring the fact that the sand would get all over her clothing.
"That is unusual in a young woman your age." The Guardian sighed, then looked out at the sunlight off the water. "I prefer being around color when I am away from my father's realm. It is more cheerful."
"Why? I don't need that kind of attention," she stated bluntly. At the mention of cheerful, she seemed to grimace slightly. Her definition of cheerful and Pluto's were clearly different.
"You're lonely." She stated simply, knowing that to be a fact. She saw it in the young woman almost as clearly as she saw some of the problems that other island residents had.
Another head shake. "I have lots of friends."
"Here, or in your own world?"
Sunako tilted her head, causing her hair to fall forward. "Here. Josephine, Akira-kun, and Hiroshi-kun. I thought they weren't, but the first hut I was assigned to, they were there." Yes, she was talking about her anatomical dolls and the skull.
Pluto knew that the girl was not speaking of any actual residents on the island, since none had names like those. "What about the living? Or those who are living here, but dead to their own homes?"
She thought for a moment. "The radiant creatures I lived with..."
"Radiant creatures?"
She looked at Pluto through the veil of her straight black hair. "Radiant creatures... creatures of the light... they're all the same. Blinding and beautiful. There were four of them in my auntie's house." As if that explained everything.
That really didn't explain much for the Guardian and god's daughter, confusion actually on her face. "What makes someone a radiant creature, in your mind?"
"Being beautiful and bright. You're one. Which is weird, considering your name." Sunako pushed some of her hair back and crossed her legs.
"It is not actually my name, but it is a name that I go by." Pluto smiled, letting the sound of crashing waves calm her mind. "My father is Lord of the Underworld, and I am only his daughter. I suppose being beautiful is to be expected of the daughter of a god and a goddess' daughter."
She was silent for a moment, attention shifting to the water. "Have you always been a creature of the light?"
She had to think about that, nodding slowly after a minute or so. "By your definition, I think I would be."
"I tried. Wasn't worth it."
"It is not something that you can try once and give up on."
She blinked again. "...why not?"
"Life does not work like that. You cannot try something once, and then hide away if things do not go your way." Pluto smiled sadly, as if she had knowledge of that first-hand. "Life hurts when bad things happen, but the good times can outweigh the bad."
Sunako turned wide violet eyes on Pluto. "I can, and I did. I'm happy the way I am."
"For now, maybe. But you can never hide from the world entirely..." She shook her head sadly, then looked at Sunako with the same sad eyes. "Humans were never meant to hide from the world. Only myself, and two of my sisters."
"Not hiding." Oh, that was a lie.
And the signs of lies were there, signs Pluto could read. "You hide in your clothing, and you hide in your room. You hide your heart, is that so it is not broken?"
Sunako abruptly uncrossed her legs and stood up. "My heart was broken a long time ago." She lowered her head. "There's no point if all anyone cares about is beauty."
"There are several kinds of beauty, young one." She smiled, "Outer beauty is one of them, but there are more kinds than that. But, it is hard to get someone to notice you when you hide in your clothing."
"I told you, I don't want to be noticed." She took a few steps toward the water.
"Do you, really?"
"Yes." Stated very matter-of-factly.
Pluto shook her head, not trusting that to be an accurate response.
After another moment of silence, Sunako sighed quietly. "If I went to the shop... when would be best?" It was an attempt at being more friendly - as well as directing the conversation in a slightly different direction.
"I would suggest coming by when the store opens, if you want just some time without having a sugar-fueled shinigami around." Pluto smiled, "Tsuzuki can be rather exuberant. Allelujah is more subdued."
All Sunako heard of that was the word 'shinigami'. Cue an obvious perk. "Shinigami?"
"Tsuzuki is a shinigami, but he is more appropriately described as someone who loves his sweets and would rather not work."
That only made her more interested. She liked chocolate. Was at times rabid for it. "I'd like to meet him, actually."
Pluto sighed, not willing to inflict Tsuzuki on anyone unless they were definitely prepared for it. "He usually comes in for work after he gets pastries, and before leaving to take a nap."
She nodded, making a note of that.
"You would consider him a creature of the light as well."
If it were possible for humans to bristle, that's exactly what she did. "But... isn't he a death god?" In her mind, they were supposed to be dark and gruesome, not bright and gorgeous.
A god? Pluto couldn't help but laugh, the idea of Tsuzuki as a god was just too funny to her. "Shinigami is merely a title, he is not actually a death god. He works for the lord of the underworld in his own little corner of his dimension."
"...oh." Well, that was significantly disappointing. Still... "I'll see for myself."
"All right."
She smiled. Yes, smiled. And the world didn't end.
Pluto smiled, glad to see a smile on the girl's face. It was certainly a good start.
