Sam blinked a couple of times, then simply stared at the brochure he had just been given. Was this... for real? The title seemed to be a little odd. Turning towards his boyfriend, he brought up the document so that it was within Jeff's sight line.
''Are we... supposed to be taking this seriously? It sounds like satire material.'' he whispered, making sure Ms. Pillsbury wouldn't hear them.
Then, grabbing his guitar, Sam walked up to the floor and prepared himself to sing. His song selection had been a careful process, in which Jeff helped significantly, turning down some of his ideas, before they settled on a song. Indeed, over the last few glee meetings, the couple had noticed their sub teacher had really seemed uncomfortable with Jeff's rendition of that Sam Tsui medley, at Emma still seemed to be slightly uncomfortable with Jeff.
''Alright guys, so this is my contribution. It's about... overcoming sadness, thus about regaining happiness.''
And with that, he started singing, softly at first:
''I'm not afraid of anything in this world There's nothing you can throw at me that I haven't already heard I'm just trying to find a decent melody A song that I can sing in my own company I never thought you were a fool But darling look at you, oh''
Sam allowed his eyes to wonder to Emma, who was tapping her foot along with the beat.
''You gotta stand up straight Carry your own weight These tears are going nowhere baby
You've got to get yourself together You've got stuck in a moment And now you can't get out of it Don't say that, later will be better Now you're stuck in a moment And you can't get out of it''
He allowed himself a breathing pause, before continuing on with the song.
''I will not forsake The colors that you bring The nights you filled with fireworks They left you with nothing I am still enchanted By the light you brought to me I listen through your ears Through your eyes I can see
And you are such a fool To worry like you do, oh I know it's though And you can never get enough Of what you don't really need Now, my oh my...''
The chorus came again, as he caught Jeff's eye. He smiled. The song wasn't directed at his boyfriend, but hey, if Ms. Pillsbury interpreted this as Sam telling Jeff to move past his last performance, then, well... he wouldn't exactly complain.
''You've got to get yourself together You've got stuck in a moment And you can't get out of it Oh love, look at you now You've got yourself stuck in a moment And you can't get out of it
I was unconscious, half asleep The water is warm 'til you discover how deep I wasn't jumping, for me it was a fall It's a long way down nothing, at all
You've got to get yourself together You've got stuck in a moment And you can't get out of it Don't say that, later will be better Now you're stuck in a moment And you can't get out of it''
Then, the back vocals section started. Just like they had briefly rehearsed, Jeff joined in:
''(And if the night runs over) (And if the day won't last) (And if our way should falter) (Along the stony pass) (And if the night runs over) And if, and if, the night runs (And if the day won't last) ...Day won't last And if your way should falter (And if our way should falter) Along the stony pass (Along the stony pass) It's just a moment This time will pass''
The song over, Sam simply stood where he was for a brief moment, taking in the crowd's reaction. Then, he walked back to his seat.
