One for Sorrow, two for joy
Three for a girl, four for a boy
Five for silver, six for gold,
Seven for a secret, never to be told…..
That last one’s right enough, thought Claire. This secret’s staying with me for ever.
She thought how Mom would react if she knew about her feelings for Allison. Her father would be disappointed, but Mom would freak. It would probably be enough for her to be sent away to another school, across country with her grandmother on the west coast.
The idea of being punished for this bought intense sadness, and a wave of bitterness - and determination that it wouldn’t happen. If this meant holding in the happiness she felt, and living a lie to have a life with the person she loved, then so be it.
