The ball hit the ring and bounced out, causing John to step smartly to the right to stop it. Bouncing the ball heavily on the wooden floor, he started singing again as he lined up his next shot.
He paused, listening for the footsteps that heralded the arrival of Vernon and his beige leather shoes. Hearing the clack of sole upon floor tile, he launched the ball as the door burst open. He watched the basketball fly straight and true, hitting the back-board before dropping through the hoop.
John knew from Vernon’s silence that he’d bought the others enough time to get back to the library. Doing the right thing felt good for once.
John turned towards Vernon, who ushered him out towards his fate. And he smiled. He could take whatever Vernon threw at him, because it was for a just cause this time…..
