When they finally dragged the metal box inside, nobody wanted to be the one to open it, it had been so long.

Eventually, Brian picked up the screwdriver and popped the lid.

There it was: the accumulated memories of a childhood thirty years past. For each of them, it held secrets both painful and pleasurable. The notes given furtively in class, the single diamond stud. The ugly carved lamp-base. The letter, signed by five unique young people, rebelling against the system.

Claire picked up a brown soft-back book and opened it. Page upon page of faded Polaroid, individual and group shots. All of happier, simpler times. If only they’d understood then….

She looked up through tear-blurred eyes at her three friends, wishing that John hadn’t escaped to the army, a decision that left him lying beside a dusty Afghan road.

“What use a dead hero, John?” she whispered to herself…..
