At district court this morning there's a hearing that I'm really excited to see. One of the former attorneys at my office is Steve Singer, a Loyola law professor who has taken over the public defender's office. Today he's being charged with contempt of court. The new board of the New Orleans Public Defender's office, of which Steve is the president, has mandated that public defenders can no longer have private practice, but must be full-time. This has thrown the New Orleans legal system into a tizzy, since almost everybody (besides the indigent on defense) had a good thing going the old way.

I'm jazzed to see it. Steve's been my supervisor the past week, and I didn't know about any of this- him taking over the public defender's office, the contempt hearing- until I looked at the front page of the newspaper on Wednesday.

The morning bus ride in gives me just enough time to say morning prayers. I sat in the back as the seats rumbled down Tulane Avenue. Today's Friday prayer was Psalm fifty-one, one of my favorites.

Living in community and working full-time has challenged me to start seeking out prayer. I think I've just started to respond to that challenge. I'm working with the Jesuits down here to set up the 19th Annotation, an hour of prayer a day for nine months. I love working in a law firm, I love going to court, even sorting through old documents looking for the right phrase in a transcript isn't that bad. I think I've found what it is I've been called to do. What makes it especially appealing is that I can complement it with prayer.

The inside of St. Mary's of the Assumption. I stopped by on Wednesday, and amidst the scaffolding, fell in love with the lighting. They look just like little casino lights.

From the National Shrine of St. Anne, Christendom's best-named saint.

Goofy mug shot. Right after the stumbling homeless man passed by and declared, "there is no justice!"
