Today's been full of little rewards: I received a package from home, with my Ezra Pound books, LSAT materials, baseball mitt and some icons of Our Lady.

Tomorrow, I have a car. I'm renting a compact to drive early Monday morning to Bogalusa, near the Mississippi border, to pick up a client being released from prison. My weekend plans are adjusting accordingly; we're throwing a party tonight (if you're near New Orleans, you're invited), and Saturday I'm going to make a pilgrimage to John Kennedy Toole's grave. He's buried less than a mile away from my house, and I think paying a visit to his grave will be good incentive to finish A Confederacy of Dunces, which I've been happily picking at for the past three months.

I might make it an author's weekend. I'm tempted to take the rented car to Covington and visit the Benedictine abbey where Walker Percy, New Orleans' other great Catholic novelist, is buried. Otherwise the car will come in handy for drive thru daiquiri stands.

Happy Birthday, Mary. Noon mass at Immaculate Conception was bigger than usual, I'm guessing in your honor.
