[Halo] This is not the tea break it was meant to be

May 16, 2009 17:32

Ten minutes. That was all he wanted, just ten minutes of quiet to drink his tea and perhaps read a chapter of a book without any fighting, yelling, complaining or weapon tossing going on around him. He had hoped his library might provide a safe haven, as few of the girls seemed to have any use of the space other then using it as temporary ( Read more... )

Charlotte wasn't making a habit of greeting new comers. Better to let them get settled because she had absolutely nothing to offer them anyway. When the newest holo started up, though, she couldn't resist. The accent drew her in.

"Well, nothing will eat you right off, so that's something."

There was a woman talking to him from the screen of the mobile thing, and while her claim that nothing would eat him was reassuring he had no idea if she was to be trusted or not.

"At least not until the sun goes down, right?"

"Not even then, so far as I can tell. I haven't done a lot of night walking, though. Kittens to care for and a room mate that gets touchy if I wander too much." She shook her head. "Really, the most deadly thing around here seems to be ennui."

"After the year I've had I could do with a bit of ennui."

Another one who wanted a break. Lovely for them, but Charlotte had just been getting her life into something that had some promise. "I can't say there's nothing going on, but I've found most of it easy to miss. The place is pretty big for how few people are here so far."

"And they are, that is to say, is everyone of the few people here actually people?" It wouldn't be the first time someone was sent to a dimension populated with demons.

She inhaled sharply, shaking her head. "I've been told that some of the people claim to be slightly more than people people, but the only thing I've seen could be explained...." She paused. "Or not. It still doesn't seem like any of our fellow prisoners make a habit of nibbling on others."

"That's a relief." His first concern, naturally, was vampires, demons, or hell dimensions.

"Forgive me, I should have introduced myself. I'm Giles."

She smiled gently. Showing up in this place always threw people for a loop. "No need to apologize. Important things first, then names. I'm Charlotte Blaine. If there's anything I can do to help you settle in, just find me on this thingie." She pointed at her wrist to indicate the tablet. "It's pretty easy to use."

"Charlotte," he nods his head slightly and smiles, "Thank you."

He makes a face when he looks at the tablet. "Mobiles and PDE type things aren't my thing."

Charlotte laughed. "More a stone tablet kind of guy?" She had not problem understanding that. She was comfortable with the technology, but would still be much happier curled up with a book that had some age to it. "Just wait until you see the replicators. You'll love them."

"More of a book kind of guy," he corrects. "Stone tablets would take up too much space on bookshelves."

He winces a bit at the idea that there is even more technology here to cope with. "Replicators?"

"That seems to be what we're all calling them. They'll make pretty much anything you need, up to and including furniture." She shrugged. "They make pretty good booze."
