Some days, he got the feeling that SG-1 was singled out for picking on by some cosmic force beyond the Ascended Ancients. Back on Earth, he never ruled that possibility out--though they always had their share of good luck to get out of all the troubles that dropped into their laps.
Here, he was beginning to think there was no other explanation. For a little bit there, he'd been counting the days until Teal'c arrived, or Sam got them out. It'd felt like a twisted game of dominoes since he'd found the Asgard Core missing when he went looking for Sam. The worst part of it, was the fact that they simply...vanished. There was nothing he could fight--nothing he could protect his team from.
He kept a close eye on the the two left from his world, even though he wouldn't be able to do anything to stop their vanishing, even if he tried. In truth, there were only the two who wandered far from the mountain left, and he couldn't bear the thought that they might vanish without his knowing about it.
There was one he was tracking a bit more closely, though. Not because she was more likely to vanish for longer periods of time, or that he might be less distressed by Sheppard's vanishing--the man was a friend, after all--but because the dominoes of SG-1 most directly affected her, not Sheppard.
And, yes, she was his teammate. The last one left, in fact. He had his own reasons for keeping an eye on her with the tablets. Today the idea of spending time outside in the city of Taxon wasn't particularly appealing, and he'd already done his daily allotment of running. It was as good a time as any to see how Vala was holding up in person.
That, and when he'd wondered into the Gate control room, he spotted Vala physically kicking the gate.
He skidded to a halt as he ran into the gateroom--and made a note to have a stern talk to the one who overwaxed the floor. "Vala?"
