Carlton Lassiter had been finishing up the paperwork for his latest case. A case, mind you, that had needed absolutely no psychic intervention. He was always thankful for cases like those. With the last “I” dotted and “T” crossed, he stacked the papers neatly and slid them into their proper folder. The mail run would pick them up shortly, so he had a few minutes to kill, and he was dying for some coffee.
He pushed himself away from desk and crossed the room confidently. Carlton felt good today. He wasn’t sure what it was, but there was something in the air that just put a bounce in his step. If he thought about it for any length of time, it was probably the lack of Spencer’s presence. That always cheered him up. Carlton poured himself some coffee and took a sip.
The mail guy happened to turn the corner just after and knocked into him, spilling over half the mug. “Oh, for Pete’s sake!” He said, arching his body as if that would help. “Watch where you’re-“ He stopped and twisted his face into a scowl. “Just get out of my sight!” His voice bellowed throughout the police station. Many people turned to look. Most weren’t surprised, though.
He turned back towards his desk, to tell everyone to get back to work, but by the time he had made the 180, he wasn’t where he should have been at all. The bright lights of the Santa Barbara Police Department had been traded in for the cold, gray, metallic room. Where in the hell was he? Carlton went for his gun, which was nowhere to be found. His coffee mug was gone as well. The stain on his shirt seemed to have traveled with him, though. Lovely.
“Alright, what is this?” He paused, and when the answer didn’t come quick enough, he growled, “This isn’t funny! As an officer of the law, I demand you show yourselves.” He glanced down and noticed two things. One, he had a strange metallic band on his wrist. Two, there was a phone on the pedestal beside him. Carlton grabbed for the tablet and pressed a few buttons, hoping for answers.
