No-one on my flist is posting, and I feel bereft of amusement. Well,
hathy_col has. And there is the amusing
Doctana vs. Romoctor debate over at
otp_probably. But still. I am fussy and demanding and want more. DANCE, MONKEY, DANCE!
Ahem.
...
I'm going for 'Romoctor', personally, with Romana II, because Romana II was prettier more fun and the word just sounds better. Although rather like an agricultural implement.
Work today was AS HELL, and it is only Monday, but there we go. The day improved muchly with learning of aleph null (and aleph one, and theoretical aleph five in 6 dimensions; fear my newly rediscovered love of mathematics [along with inability to distiguish between multiplication and addition, oops]) while food shopping with Dad (we ended up just wandering around the supermarket discussing the algebra of infinities, with no idea where we were going nor what else we had to buy). Then there was swimming with such of les folles as could make it; Amy is still away (she is never here, seriously) and Caroline couldn't make it, so Sam, Ellie, Jenni and I swum for an hour or so. There shall perhaps be swimming with Sam again tomorrow night, because we are crazy like that.
Yes. Small side-note of contention: I am a little irritated by the way people around me have been saying 'oh, are you still swimming?' as if it's some bizarre phase I'm going to grow out of. Or as if I have no willpower and do nothing useful, or excercising, or independant like that. Um. Yes.
I am onto my second MUNCLE book; I was wrong, there are only five, and the bad thing about them is that they don't take terribly long to read. I'm really rather enjoying them, though; yes, I know I said that yesterday, but still, it bears repeating. (We can have moan'o'matic
tau_sigma if you'd prefer, but I'm attempting to learn from others, namely
hathy_col's 90 year old, and be happy. Um. That is the idea, anyway.) They're different from what I normally read, mainly in the intrigue and mystery and insane plots - latest book (no. 6, The DAGGER Affair) revolves around a machine which damps energy needed for reactions, including biochemical reactions of human bodies ... erm. And then they forget that this thing is supposed to be on a timer, and they get in a car with it, despite having first-hand experience of its effect on both cars and people. CLEVER, guys. Yes, in general I'm finding Solo and Kuryakin of fic-verse to be rather cleverer than their novel counterparts, but this may be due to fic writer's idealisation.
Also, this one is by a different author to the last, and so does not have annoying focus on breasts. And women wearing trousers, omg. *quirks eyebrow*
Random thought: can someone advise me on use of semi-colons? And colons, for that matter, and any other sort of punctuation you like. Only I think I rather abuse semi-colons in particular; they're so funky but I'm not really sure that I use them in the right places, I just like to pretend that my writing is sophisticated because I use advanced punctuation. *laughs at self*
Also, I may take up fencing next year. This is a sudden, bizarre thought which sadly will probably not come to fruition. *sigh* I've been thinking, basically, that I don't do enough at uni. Not enough work, for one thing; but then last year I was living in fear of having no friends and proper human contact. This year, having friends already, I can hopefully relax a bit and get down to serious Physics and Maths-ing. (There's something terribly wrong with that sentiment.) But also, that I don't do enough in the way of extra-curricular activities: there are all these clubs and societies and activities out there that are very much a facet of university life, and something I ought to take advantage of before it's too late. And what I do, I tend to do with friends I already have. That's great, and in many ways what I prefer, but I think it would probably be good for me to get out and do things with other people a bit. And do more, different, things. And generally become more of an interesting person.
So, Heather mentioned fencing and that really rather appeals to me. Sadly, I think I remember it as being on a Thursday night, which will be no good for me what with St. Oswald's choir practice. In which case I will have to find something else - suggestions on a postcard, please. *g* Ballroom dancing did occur to me, but I don't know; I'm ridiculously uncoordinated and slightly worried I would plumb the utter depths of terribleness. But we shall see.
Now, although I could certainly ramble more - for instance, about fresher's week and how much I'm looking forward to it, but how glad I am that I won't have to experience it as a fresher again - I do have work tomorrow, and have realised that a letter came a couple of weeks ago about tuition fees and I have yet to finish reading it. And there is that blasted HC1 form (my attempt to get free eye tests and such, basically) which I still haven't filled in, because I had it almost done and then I got a job, and that complicates matters rather. And e-mailing tax people, too. Um. Goodnight, folks, I must away.
[ETA:
insaneizzi linked to
this wonderful shipwar which broke out on
time_and_chips. Gratuitously re-linking, for the benefit of others who have not yet seen, and want to share in the Romoctor/Doctana love/hate, and for my own memory purposes.]
Edited again: ALSO. It is that time of year again; should I take up Russian properly with the uni Language Centre? For some reason this has only just occured to me again. Um. If I want to, I should probably apply now and save myself the hassle later. But is it a good idea? Or should I do something which doesn't stick to my current science/language/music mould? ADVISE ME, PEOPLES. Please?
