I have just watched Karol. It's an autobiographical film about the life of Karol Wojtyla, who in 1978 became Pope Giovanni Paolo II, and I'd really recommend it to anyone.

I'd love to write properly about just why it's been such an important experience. About why it's a good film, and why I think you should watch it. But I can't, because what I'm feeling at the moment is really too large to be written down. But really, watch it.

You don't have to be Catholic to gain something from it. It's a moving and wonderful film no matter who you are; no matter what background or race or faith or lack of faith you approach it from. Even if you don't believe (as I do) in God who chose Karol Wojtyla, the film has an awful lot to show about love and perseverence through hard times, showing as it does the Pope's training to become a priest in a Poland occupied by the Nazi regime, and the country's continued struggle against Communism. Even from a purely historical point of view, I think Karol is really important, educating, interesting and moving.

I feel blessed to have seen it. It may sound clichéd, but honestly, I do.

life, church, religion
