spallation

Apr 02, 2007 19:05

I am quite, quite bored of crystallography. And I've only been revising it for, oh, half an hour? But I have come across the word 'spallation', and this clearly merits an LJ post, because well, spallation. If I hadn't written it in my notes, I wouldn't believe it was a real word.

(It's a way of producing neutrons, by the way. At least, I think it is. It's followed by a little picture involving a small box of uranium being hit by high energy [~800 MeV] protons and little n's popping out of the other side. Apparently this happens a lot in Oxford. Most of this is probably irrelevant.)

The best Physics word, though, has to be electrophorus. It always makes me think of some poor, sad little electrical creature with a trunk rather like an elephant.

(An electrophorus is used for spooning charge, which clearly is curling up post-coitally with your electron.)

I am geeking liek woah, yes. But I'm actually working. This is good. Yes.

I could waffle at you about Bravais lattices and Miller indices now, but probably it's best if I go back and write more notes. Oh yay for Crystals, Vibrations and X-rays. Hmm.
