So I never do posts about Friday Night Lights, and I haven't made a secret of the fact that this season hasn't clicked for me like last year's near-perfect one. But there were so many moments that made me laugh out loud this week and in general just reminded me why, even when it's been off, this show is a one-of-a-kind.
Okay, first thing - the Matt and Landry friendship is one I've taken for granted but was reminded how great it really is. OMG, when they were talking about both being in unexpected relationships and Landry goes, "If you'd told me you were gonna be with a hot Mexican nanny." Matt: "She's not Mexican, and she's not a nanny. She's a Guatemalan in-home care nurse." LMAO! And the thumbs-up at the end. :D
Then when Tim was on the radio and that girl called in and says, "I like you because you have long hair... LIKE JESUS." (!!!!!) HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I loved the scene with Coach and Mrs. Coach at the beginning, when they're in the kitchen getting ready for dinner and she's telling him about her high school flame coming to town. Coach is so hot when he's jealous. And how Mrs. Coach is like, "That's right, honey. I'm your prize guernsey." Oh, the love. I love how she tells him she loves him and overdoes it with the "sweeties" and "hons" when she's ticked off at him. LOL I'll say it again and again: they're so real.
I still hate the Tyra/Landry and Tim/Lyla pairings, but Tyra and now especially Tim are pretty much my favorite characters (Coach and Mrs. Coach aside), so I do enjoy watching them. I have a lot of complaints about this season, but they have done an amazing job fleshing out Tim. He's almost taken over Matt's role as the heart of the show, that's how great they've done with him (between the scenes with him being homeless, sleeping in his truck, and mooching a bed wherever he can; the scenes with him watching out for Julie; and the scenes between him and Coach when Coach finds out the truth... they've struck gold). BTW... don't care much for Matt this season either (though last week's shower scene with him and Coach was one of the best this season).
And I wish that I just liked the stories this season more than I do. I think that's where my problem lies. I hate the Christianity story with Lyla, just because it's borderline offensive. Like when she's at the ranch with that guy and appears to be perfectly willing to have sex with him. Has she learned nothing? When you make a commitment to wait, it's not something done lightly, and it's an important part of your values and who you are. I should know, I speak from personal experience. I was glad the guy stopped it because I was thinking, "Seriously?" I hate the storyline because it's not a positive image they're portraying. And Christians are stereotyped enough as it is. /rant
I think the story with Jason this week is interesting, but that might just be because he's been missing for so long. One thing I'm pretty sure of - the nails are in the coffin for the Jason/Lyla and Tim/Tyra relationships. I hate to say that because those are the pairings I prefer, but I just don't see them going back to them. They did set up really good couples on this show, but as brilliant as it is as a whole, the triangle mess so early in the first season hurt it IMO. I think Matt and Julie could still find their way back together. They're kids, so I'm not really invested. Mostly just bummed that Tim and Tyra have grown to be such great characters, and I think they could have had a healthy, mature relationship if they came back together. It could be written.
But even if I'm not 100% feeling the stories this season, this episode brought back the humor that I'd been missing in a big way. And the heart was present too. I thought the scene with the Whitmore coach that Smash and Coach met with was very well done. That sweet old coach. I was proud for Smash this week. And the scene with his mom (which are always the best) almost made me cry. "When God closes a door, he opens a window. He doesn't make any fumbles. It's touchdowns every time." Gotta love Mama Smash.
Yes, when FNL combines its humor and its heart, it's a winner every time.
Oh, and P.S.: This show makes so many cool Texas references. :P Lyla mentioned colleges she's considering. My mom went to Baylor University! I thought that was pretty cool. Last year, Tyra was talking about schools and named my dad's alma mater, Texas Tech. Of course, they have yet to name my school, Texas A&M. (And hisssss to Texas, Lyla. That's our big rival.) I also heard Tami's high school sweetheart reference Abilene. I have family who lives there; it's about two hours away. Just one of those fun perks for us Texas watchers. ;)
P.P.S.: OT but I saw Fool's Gold tonight and just thought I'd tack on my thoughts. It's not a great film, mostly because I wish it'd been better written and more devoted to the ROMANTIC part of the romantic comedy. BUT, that said, I still enjoyed it because Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are really good together. I loved How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and while this isn't nearly as good as that, it's still them and they are so sweet. The few scenes focused on them (particularly one in which they're in an airplane in a life-and-death situation) are great. Plus one of my absolute favorite plots is that of the estranged husband and wife who find their way back to each other. Helped my romantic fix. ;)
LOST was good too. Thoughts will be forthcoming.
