I've long been a fan of music that captures the soul of the moment, or the spirit of a time and place.  This frequently means older music (vintage jazz, for instance), or revival/roots music such as Neko Case, Asylum Street Spankers, or Squirrel Nut Zippers.  And then there are bands like Calexico whom I have loved for years.
