Summary: A sparring session is cut short by the rain.
After his fourth sparring match, Gaara was winded. He slid to the dirt, forcing his body to breathe slowly, resisting the urge to pant like a dog and take deep, even breaths. Naruto collapsed on the ground beside him, arms outstretched and legs akimbo. His blue eyes stared at the sky, at the still dark clouds that had held for the past half hour. Gaara glanced up just as a thicker cloud blew across the sky. He blinked when something pelted against his eye, feeling the moisture slip down his cheek.
"Oh man, it's starting to rain," Naruto grumbled. "I was hoping to get in another two or three more rounds at least!"
"We can wait it out," Gaara suggested. He watched the sky and his eyes traced the drops of water falling from the sky. He squinted as it fell against his forehead, his cheeks, blinking them away.
"We'll be drenched by the time it's finished," Naruto said, sitting up and trying to wipe his hands clean of a few spots of damp earth. "I should have brought an umbrella."
Gaara smiled and with little concentration, he sent his sand to hover above them, a solid shield covering their heads.
"Hey, neat!" Naruto said as he stared at the makeshift shelter. He scoot closer to Gaara and Gaara's shield adjusted, carefully covering them both. They sat quietly for awhile, observing the approaching storm. Gaara was acutely aware of the two or three inches between them and the way Naruto picked at the dirt beneath his nails. His nose tipped up toward the clouds and his blue eyes, brighter than the gray above them watched them thoughtfully. He looked so serious, like he was pondering the meaning of life itself. "I wonder if Ichiraku's will be open when it's raining."
Gaara laughed and Naruto looked offended, grimacing a little. He batted away a clump of sand that fell against his shoulder. "Stop that," he said, referring to the sand, but Gaara glanced up and smiled a little. The sand above them had grown dark with damp. Gaara eased his control of it a little and a few more sodden clumps went tumbling down.
"It's the water," he said. "It's heavy." And Naruto nodded, his face scrunched up in thought.
"When it stops, we should make a run for it," he said. "My apartment isn't too far." Gaara nodded even as Naruto unzipped his jacket, slipping his arms free. The black tank underneath exposed the pendant hanging at his neck and his tan arms, sunkissed like the rest of him. "I'll shield us," he said, scooting even closer and raising the jacket to cover both their heads. "Granny won't forgive me if I let the Kazekage get sick," he smiled. Gaara slowly let the sand go and the rain fell against the jacket, pattered against the fabric. Naruto's arm brushed against Gaara's shoulder, his torso so close, Gaara hardly needed to lean to bump into him. For all the chilliness of autumn, Gaara felt warm and he lowered his face lest his expression reveal it. He shivered a little and Naruto frowned at him, scooting himself even closer so that his arm ran along Gaara's shoulders, his torso firmly pressed against Gaara's left arm.
"You're not used to the rain, are you?" Naruto said thoughtfully and Gaara shook his head, resisting the urge to lean his head against the other. As though reading his thoughts, Naruto leaned his head against Gaara's. "Can you grab the other end?" he asked and Gaara nodded, holding up one end of the jacket while Naruto's hand slipped lower, encircling Gaara's waist. Naruto shivered a little himself and he realized the other boy was in a tank top, at the height of autumn, in the rain. He told himself it was a matter of necessity as his own arm slid around Naruto's waist, pulled the other boy closer as they shared body heat.
"It's really coming down," Naruto commented, accepting the arm without question. He concentrated on the sky, the clouds, on anything but this new proximity between them.
"Yeah," Gaara agreed.
"We might have to wait for awhile," Naruto said, his fingers curling a little against Gaara's side.
Gaara glanced up as a low rumble sounded. He smiled as the rain intensified around them. "Yeah," he agreed.
