Summary: It's not about luck.
Joan holds up her hand, the rock on her finger twinkling as it catches the fluorescent light. Her red stained lips spread across her face, a brilliant smile that shines nearly as bright as her ring.
"She's so lucky," the new girl comments at her desk. Peggy glances down as she leans against the doorway of her office. She doesn't need to see the girl's face to know what sort of admiration must be reflected there. "Engaged to a doctor! I wish I could be so lucky, don't you?"
Big blue eyes look at her expectantly. Peggy cracks a wry grin, her gaze crossing the room to a huddle of men; to the back of a blue coat fitted to slim shoulders and brown hair neatly slicked back.
"I suppose some would consider that lucky," she says. The smile vanishes on her secretary's face. "Mr. Howard?" Peggy repeats herself. "I need him on line one? And have that letter typed up before lunch time. I would like it to be sent out today."
Peggy ignores the disgruntled look on her girl's face. She turns back toward her office, shoots one last look over her shoulder at Joan Holloway shining behind a circle of admirers. Pete Campbell looks across the room, catching her with the same brown eyes as a child now half a country away.
Peggy nods in greeting and closes the door behind her back. It's not about luck, she thinks, pressing her hand against the wood. Joan knows that and Pete knows that. It's about knowing what you want and making it.
