So I called Orange because they keep fucking up my direct debit. The man on the other end kept breaking into song in between, whilst waiting for his computer to load or whatever they do. I didn't say anything. I'm British. If someone does something obscenely unusual directly to me, I tend to ignore it and pretend it never happened. Obviously that wasn't good enough for him:
"I just got through to the next round on the X Factor!" is what I think he said. A very deep Glaswegian accent, as all these call centres seem to be populated with. This being outside my zone of comfort, my response was was 'Oh, good'. With literally no enthusiasm in my voice. People shouldn't be springing their personal stuff on me, particularly if I'm just looking after my credit rating.
