Maybe I can make some sense out of WIP for you. I try to only have one WIP at a time and post shorts or drabbles that are finished while writing the WIP and posting it on my site as well as archives. I said I post one WIP at a time and don't tend to post another one until that one is complete, but that doesn't mean I don't have a folder with others started and tons of ideas to go with them. In fact I actually have 5 WIP's, but none will be posted until I have finished my Guilty Soul and until I have all the way to the ending in my head. My brain doesn't stick to one idea at a time though. I think that's part of being creative. Things pop into my head and I must write them down. Like you said you have read WIP's that were abandoned as have I. I hate abandoned WIP's because I get so wrapped up in the story and I want to know how it ended. I will never post an unfinished fic until I know that I can finish it because I don't want to abandon anything. It's one of my pet peeves. There is also the matter that some write faster than others. If some of us didn't post WIP's then you would probably only be able to read a long fic a year. I do post short fics and drabbles that pop into my head while i'm writing my WIP, but I have to say that encouragement from my beta's and fellow writers have helped me to greatly improve my writing. If it weren't for feedback I wouldn't know how to get better at what I do and I would have given up on myself before I was able to get better.
