Thanks one and all with the help in the previous post, folks. The previous suggestions, thrown into a blender with my brain and a slathering of Wikipedia, have somehow turned into the following. Acknowledging that some of these make more sense with context, a barbary lamb is a sheep/vegetable creature that grazes so far as the stalk in its navel allows it to reach and a dime museum is the sort of place that would probably have a dead "barbary lamb" proudly on display, in between the Feejee Mermaid knock-off and the shrunken heads.
