So back in something like 2009, Marek and I discovered this French hip-hop group, Manau, whose first album, Panique Celtique (celtic panic!!) was a bizarre but compelling Breton/Celtic folk/hip-hop/rap fusion. We got VERY into it, mostly because it was a hilarious novelty, although some of it was also pretty good.

Example song, with ridiculous music video: La Tribu de Dana

In a burst of nostalgic desire to revisit the good old days of ridiculous crotch shots in French Celtic hip-hop fusion, Marek posted the link to the La Tribu de Dana music video to my facebook wall this evening. Naturally, I had to go and bask in its glory. Then, in the related videos I noticed... Panique Celtique 2: Le Village.

Now, Manau has in fact released several albums since Panique Celtique, but. BUT.

Panique Celtique 2 is really good. Really good. Like I said, we got into Manau back in the day for the ridiculous novelty value of French Celtic hip-hop, but there is some serious artistic merit in this one. It's still rap/hip-hop, but leans much more towards French/Breton folk than Manau's earlier work. The central conceit of the album is the affairs of a medieval village, and yeah, I highly recommend it. I can't exactly speak to what it would be like if you don't understand French (it is partly rap, after all), but it might still be worth it. There's lots of singing and bagpipes alongside the hip-hop!

You can listen to it as a youtube playlist here: Panique Celtique 2: Le Village
