I rather enjoyed that episode (yes, I am a bit behind in the show). Perhaps because it had references to Thor and the most recent movie *\o/* but on the whole I rather liked it.
I have reserved expressing my opinion on the show mostly because after the initial wave of insta-reactions on LJ I decided I'd give myself space to watch it and time rather than rush in and see what all the fuss was about. On the whole I rather like the show, and I love that Joss is back on the small screen. However, (yes, there is an however) there are two aspects I am uncertain of.
One - Coulson himself. I love Coulson and mourned his death in Avengers and I kinda figured Shield would bring him back. I can't say I was obsessed or madly in love with his character and I can't say I had this urgent deep need to peer beneath the cool calm exterior he presents in the movies. With him as the central pivot of the show, I don't know that I like the peek behind the curtain at the Great and Powerful Coulson. I like the mystique stuff *shrugs* Maybe part of me still prefers him dead - it meant something in Avengers, his death. It was important - tragic yes, but important. It had impact, it hurt, as a fan I shook my head and said to myself 'Ah, typical Whedon, stealing away the characters we love.' Perhaps I would have preferred an exploration of Coulson's absence more. Eh, I don't know.
Two - Shield itself. Shadowy, secret government agencies I am not a fan of. In the Marvel movies so far, for me at least, Shield has reflected an aspect of 'we're not too sure what side we're on'. Avengers the movie showed that as well, the inner division between the mysterious council and Fury. One of the episodes, 1.7 I think kinda hit the nail on head on the shadowy, do or die aspect of Shield and yeah, I am not a fan.
Also, on a side note, as much as the show dances around the mutant factor and there are copyright issues blah blah, I want there to be an acknowledgement of said mutant issues. Marvel's universe is so irrevocably tied up in 'mutant' issues. *sigh*
Anyhoo, I liked 1.8 quite a bit. :D
