Movie Review: Iron Man 3

May 15, 2013 21:34

Finally saw Iron Man 3 on the weekend. I naturally have thoughts but before I dive into those thoughts... I have other thoughts :D

As I was mentaly composing this post, I got to thinking about sequels - and whether the old rule: 'sequels always suck' is still valid, specifically relating to comic book hero movies. Then, I got to thinking about Scream 2, during which there was a scene were a movie class debated the merits of sequels:

And look whose in it!! I had forgotten/not realised... \o/

However, back to Iron Man, because it was my initial reaction to the first Iron Man that reminded me of this discussion in Scream 2. IMHO I felt Iron Man was let down by its ending and 'origin story' plot. Infact, I can pretty much say that I generally prefer the second movie in a comic book series of movies, than I do the origin story.

Spiderman 1 - great
Spiderman 2 - LOVED it

X-Men 1 - great
X-Men 2 - LOVED it

Iron Man 1 - great (bar for the end)
Iron Man 2 - better, but still 'missing something'

If comic book movies are bucking the sequel trend, what about the third installment? With true trilogy's like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Back to the Future, usually the last movie is my favourite :) On the comic book side?

Spiderman 3 - hated it

X-Men 3 - hated it

and Iron Man 3..... well, it beat the trend, broke the curse - I loved it! My best Iron Man movie so far. It was wonderful - Tony felt completely 'settled' as he ever is, comfortably as Iron Man. The plot although twisty and turny was awesome. Guy Pearce was fabulous as Mandarin. Loved Pepper and Happy. Loved the little OCs, the kid and the uber fan. Loved Rhodey. It was a really cool movie.

Was there a downside? Well, not really. More of a overall gripe than anything else. I feel 'milked' as it. Milked by Marvel for more of my money. It feels strange to wait years for the Avengers for finally frigging asemble and now... back on their own seperate ways. If this was a tv series, I wouldn't mind so much, but its not. I don't get the installments every week, I get maybe two a year and while... Patient I am not when it comes to this. I feel Marvel is simply trying to maximise and draw out the cash making opportunities rather than making movies. You got them together in Avengers, just frigging give us Avengers 2 now. I do get that the mythos of the comic books spans decades and the comics crossover/interchange at will. but I'm not reading the comics. *pouts*

Also, the ending of Iron Man 3 felt overly... 'we're diverting you, leading you astray - quick look there.'

But in a nutshell - Hurrah and Huzzah!
