Secret of Monkey Island Part 3 :D

Aug 13, 2008 20:49

I'm really enjoying playing this game again so I thought I'd go ahead and finish up another part! You can find the previous parts here: Part 1 and Part 2.

We left our hero Guybrush just as he obtained his t-shirt reward from the Sword Master. Let's head back to town and see what the pirate chiefs think of this.

So it looks like you're not the first pirate to complete this quest... Our next task is to find the mysterious treasure of Melee Island. We have the two items we need - the shovel and the map - so we'll just head back to the maze where we found the Sword Master.

But where do we go? Let's look at the map again:

It's just a little obscure, but the directions are all the first word in each line - back, left, and right (back referring to 'up' on the screen). The rest is just fluff. Following...

Awesome, the yellow flowers! This time I won't forget to pick one. I didn't take any caps of the rest of the forest because all the screens are basically identical - you just follow the map directions and eventually you come to a screen that's not like the others:

Going to the right:

Uhhh.... let's look at the sign?

... what? How many people are doing this quest, anyway?? There's another marker off to the right:

Well let's get to it then:

... the treasure is ANOTHER t-shirt. And that friendly sign... are you starting to get any suspicions about what this place really is? Monkey Island 1 and 2 were all written by one team (primarily Ron Gilbert) and they flow well together. The ending of the second game reveals the origin of the oddness you see here and elsewhere on the island... but that's for later. :) Monkey Island 3 was written by other people and while an awesome game it doesn't quite fit with the first two. But to continue:

Let's take a look at the t-shirt we just got:

And now let's bring it back to the pirate chiefs!

Looks like Guybrush was hoping for something a little better than a t-shirt.

At least it is chic? Well, at least we've completed two of the three trials. All that's left is to obtain the treasure from the governor's mansion, which is on the other side of town.

While we are here though I want to look in the alley again - I forgot to show you something!

Nothing out of the ordinary here... right? It plays no role in this game at all, but it returns with a big twist in Monkey Island 2. So remember! :) Continuing to the mansion:

Oh god if poodles weren't bad enough these are PIRANHA POODLES. D: There's obviously no way we can just walk by, so what can we do... basically, you need to do a little experimentation here. If you throw the meat at the monsters they will eat it - and do nothing, so you'll have to try something else. Maybe if you put something in the meat....

The poodles who are over the meat toss a little chunk to the dog on the short leash. Awwww.... after a few moments:

Ahahahah I always laugh when I see this. Now it's safe to head inside the mansion.

Okay this door is locked and you can't interact with the other upper door, so we'll have to head back to the glass one next to the main entrance:

Just as soon as you pass inside:

OSHI-

What follows is a cutscene of Guybrush and Fester fighting where you can see them. You can't do anyting here, but the SCUMM command bar at the bottom displays what Guybrush is doing. This is funny enough to be able to stand on it's own:

Guybrush gets thrown through the wall!

But he quickly returns to the fight:

Okay, now we know what we need next! If you go to the first logical place, the shop, the shopkeeper will tell you that he's all out of files, so where else can we go... of course! The jail! :D

The prisoner's breath is so foul that Guybrush will refuse any further communication with him! So, we have to find something to fix his halatosis... fortunately, the shopkeeper can help us here.

Oh ha ha ha.

Returning the mints to the prisoner:

Ugh you'd think those would make his breath WORSE.

I missed a cap here but Otis just says that he's innocent.

Uhhh... I don't know anything at all about picking yellow flowers in the forest mister...nothing...

:D

Well...gophers are kind of like rats...kinda?

Of course, since this is a cake in a prison it must contain a file.

Awesome! Now we can return to the mansion.

As soon as you enter the hole in the wall, the fight continues:

Awesome, we have the idol! But unfortunately we've let Fester out...

SO DO YOU! Uh... I mean...

The governor. :o

TOLD YOU!

:o

Ahahahah I love this too, Guybrush's name FINALLY pays off.

<3

It helps if you use real words, Guybrush. A little. Well, there's no reason to stay in the mansion, so we'll head out by the front door... but...

Shit. The screen goes black for a moment, then:

Fester kicks the idol here, dragging Guybrush underwater with it!

And that is it for this part. Will Guybrush find a way to escape his watery grave? Will he ever learn to speak coherently to women and win the governor's heart? What is Fester's plan? FIND OUT NEXT TIME! :D
